A 9.7-kilometre stretch of beach extends within the municipality of Dolni Chiflik at the mouths of the Kamchia and Fandakliyska rivers. The coastal region includes four resort complexes: Kamchia–Longoza, Shkorpilovtsi North, Shkorpilovtsi South and the village of Shkorpilovtsi. Several coastal resorts and landscapes are therefore in focus, from beaches and rivers to wet woodland areas.

Coastal resorts and types of accommodation

Shkorpilovtsi is considered a seaside resort where beach and mountain meadows come together; the village has hotels and holiday complexes. Accommodation in the coastal resorts also includes villas, family hotels and bungalows. In the Kamchia resort, forest, river and sea meet. Wide beaches and dunes are part of the landscape there, along with hotels, campsites and restaurants. It is best to check the specific options for your travel dates.

Longoz forest and protected nature

The municipality of Dolni Chiflik has 20 protected natural areas, including the Kamchia, Kirov Dol and Valchi Prehod reserves. Kamchia Reserve covers 849.7531 hectares in the land areas of Novo Oryahovo, Staro Oryahovo and Bliznatsi and lies near the Kamchia and Shkorpilovtsi resorts. The floodplain forests at the mouth of the Kamchia are considered a particularly representative example of Longoz forests in the eastern Balkans. Along the Kamchia Valley, Longoz forests and wetlands form a damp natural zone shaped by the river’s regular floods.

The reserve’s biodiversity also makes it a distinctive natural attraction: 245 species of higher plants grow there, and 258 bird species are also found. These include rare birds that breed in the reserve. Kamchia is also on the Via Pontica migration route. The combination of river landscape, floodplain forest and coast can be seen here within a small area, although the beach and nature reserve offer different experiences.

Activities and discoveries

At Eko Park Venelin, activities on offer include fishing, horse riding, ATV and buggy rides, archery and boat trips. If you plan to take part in one of these activities, it is worth checking what is currently available before your visit. This lets you tailor the outing to your interests without having to follow a set route.

History and folklore

The remains of four ancient settlements lie near Shkorpilovtsi. The municipality’s historical heritage also includes early Christian cemeteries and a basilica, as well as the early Bulgarian fortification wall of Tabia. Further remains are found near Golitsa, Bardarevo and Dolni Chiflik. These sites point to different traces of the past, without implying that all the finds belong to the same period.

A cultural tradition brings together Vayak communities from Bulgaria and their descendants abroad at the Germe gathering near Golitsa. Singers and musicians playing folk instruments perform Vayak folklore and other Bulgarian ethnographic traditions. Dates and programmes vary. For a rural perspective, Solnik, Golitsa, Bardarevo, Venelin, Grozdyovo, Shkorpilovtsi, Staro Oryahovo, Novo Oryahovo, Rudnik and Yunets are considered places with opportunities for rural tourism.

A natural attraction in Varna Province

The wider travel destination of Varna Province also has its own natural highlight: the Centre–South group of Pobiti Kamani comprises around 300 large and small stone columns, up to six metres high. The Natura 2000 protected area was designated to preserve Bulgaria’s largest inland sand habitats. This landscape adds a different natural attraction within Varna Province to the municipality’s coastal and river scenery.
