Lyuben Karavelovo brings together local history and opportunities for horse riding in gently rolling countryside. Highlights include St. Nicholas Church, a memorial to the fallen, archaeological sites in several directions and routes around the Borisovi Horse Base. When choosing where to stay, you can first decide whether cultural history, archaeological traces or horse riding should be the focus of your visit.

Getting there by bus route AL 54

Bus route AL 54 is a useful reference for getting there. It connects Varna with Lyuben Karavelovo, Voditsa and Zasmyano via Aksakovo and Izvorsko. If you plan to use this route, check the timetable before travelling. This will help you take the connection into account when planning your arrival.

Church, memorial and musical history

St. Nicholas Church was built in 1880. Major repairs took place in 2009, and on 11 April that year Metropolitan Kirill of Varna and Velikopreslav consecrated the church. This gives a timeline for its construction and a later phase of repairs and consecration. The “Lion” memorial marks a different aspect of local history: it commemorates people from Lyuben Karavelovo who died in the Balkan Wars and the First World War. Alongside the religious building, it also honours the village’s war dead.

Local musical history is also closely connected to Lyuben Karavelovo. The Golden Bagpipes bagpipe orchestra was founded at the Prosveshta-1922 community centre. The ensemble made its first stage appearance at the village festival in May. At a festival in Zdravec, Avren Municipality, it won a gold medal. These milestones add a musical theme to the village’s architectural and commemorative history.

Archaeological traces in different directions

Kayryatsite, about one kilometre northeast of Lyuben Karavelovo, is associated with a Roman provincial settlement of local importance. The archaeological heritage of Ukuru, also about one kilometre northeast, includes a Thracian tumulus necropolis consisting of two mounds and considered to be of national importance. South of the village, about 0.5 kilometres away and next to the farm complex, lies a medieval Bulgarian settlement. The three sites differ in both their period and location; the two northeastern sites also have different historical significance.

Reservoir and horse-riding routes

The Lyuben Karavelovo Reservoir is near the hamlet of Veselin, which belongs to Lyuben Karavelovo. The Borisovi Horse Base is on the outskirts of the village. The riding terrain is varied and gently hilly, and the routes pass through forests, fields and meadows, as well as along rivers and reservoirs. They are considered suitable for training and amateur riders. The horse-riding routes are at an average elevation of 150 metres. This gives you both the terrain and the different landscape features along the routes to help with your planning.

A tourist package combines St. Nicholas Church, the Lyuben Karavelovo Reservoir and the Borisovi Horse Base. It brings together religious heritage, the reservoir and horse riding in one offer. If you plan to take this option, confirm the specific itinerary in advance.
