A prominent historical landmark in the town center of Aksakovo is the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. The broader destination of Aksakovo, Aksakovo Municipality, extends this local perspective to include forests, rock formations, reservoirs and attractions in several settlements. For your planning, it is worth distinguishing between the town center and the municipal area: the nature and leisure destinations are not all features of the town of Aksakovo itself.

Churches and History

The central Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Aksakovo was begun in 1896 and completed for its first liturgy in 1906. Its oldest icons are on an iconostasis dating from 1900; the carved altar was made in Oreshak by the Troyan school. The town center thus combines a clearly dated building history with artisan details.

There are also churches with their own histories elsewhere in the municipality. The Church of the Holy Prophet Elijah in Botevo was built in 1867 with the Sultan’s permission and was later designated a local architectural monument of culture. The Holy Trinity Church in Izvorsko dates from 1885. These places add to the picture of Aksakovo’s religious heritage, without being confused with the church in the town center.

Forests, Protected Areas and Rock Formations

Parts of Golden Sands Nature Park, Pobiti Kamani Nature Park and the Batova locality lie within Aksakovo Municipality. Protected deciduous forests are part of the landscape in Golden Sands Nature Park; rare plants, birds and mammals can also be found there. Batova is a forested massif inhabited by rare plant and animal species listed in Bulgaria’s Red Data Book. Several mountain huts provide places to rest; if you are planning to stay overnight in a hut, check its availability in advance.

Batova is also of interest for its birdlife: 184 bird species have been recorded there, including 50 species listed in Bulgaria’s Red Data Book and 80 species of European conservation importance. These figures offer a different perspective on the forest area from the plant and animal species listed in the Red Data Book alone.

Pobiti Kamani adds a geological dimension. Upright stone columns among exposed Eocene sands are reminiscent of a stone forest. The protected area is part of the Natura 2000 network; it safeguards important inland sand habitats with characteristic flora, vegetation and wildlife. Pobiti Kamani is accessible by car or by bus route 43 to the Razklon Banovo stop in Slanchevo. Check the timetable before you travel.

Coast, Reservoirs and Recreation in the Municipality

Aksakovo Municipality has access to the sea via a beach strip more than four kilometers long. There are also reservoirs near Lyuben Karavelovo, Zasmyano, Botevo, Krumovo and Osenovo. This means that different landscape features sit side by side across the wider municipality: coast, forest and water. Osenovo Reservoir is in the area of Osenovo and is considered a year-round destination for anglers and nature lovers; fish populations may vary seasonally.

Fishing and observing wild birds and waterfowl are among the activities described at Botevo Reservoir. The birds mentioned include wild ducks, storks, snipes, swans and cormorants. Zasmano Reservoir is set in wooded surroundings near Voditsa and Zasmano and is associated with recreation and fishing. Each body of water offers its own focus rather than forming a single, uniform excursion option.

Horse Riding, Culture and Regional Attractions

The riding options across the wider destination differ in their setting and terrain. The Dolishte riding center offers forest rides for visitors of all ages, led by a professional instructor. In Kichevo, the offer includes outdoor and indoor riding, for beginners and advanced riders, in all seasons. At the Borisovi riding center, routes pass through forests, fields, meadows, rivers and reservoirs; they are suitable for training and recreational riding. The average elevation is 150 meters.

The Interactive Museum “Fishing and Blue Growth” explores fishing culture and the former everyday life of fishermen, the history of fishing, and the historical and cultural factors behind its development. The “Blue Growth” strategy is also among the topics; an interactive narrator guides visitors through the exhibition rooms. In Botevo, the Interactive Cultural and Information Center “Blue Growth” is also located in the cultural center building. Using an interactive table, it provides information about fishing, natural attractions and the resources of the local fisheries action group “Varna, Asparuhovo–Beloslav–Aksakovo District.”

The Varna Winery is located in General Kantardzhievo and began operating in 2008. It is associated with wine processing and production, wine tourism with a tasting room, and a shop selling wine and accessories. Izvorsko Farm raises cows on freely grazed land and offers dairy products whose taste is reminiscent of traditional recipes from bygone times.

When choosing your holiday apartment, you can first decide whether your stay will focus on the town center of Aksakovo or on destinations across different parts of the municipality. This keeps the distinction between the town and the wider municipal area clear as you plan your trip.
