The Municipality of Galabovo is located in southeastern Stara Zagora Province in Bulgaria. Archaeological evidence meets a landscape shaped by rivers and water engineering here. The town of Galabovo itself lies on both banks of the Sazliyka. When planning your trip, it is worth deciding first whether historic sites, nature or navigating the road connections should be your main focus.
Archaeological Traces around Galabovo
The Hisarlaka settlement mound contains the remains of a Chalcolithic settlement discovered in the courtyard of Brikel. Finds from Hisarlaka point to intensive craft activity and trade contacts with ancient Greece and the Middle East. They provide a concrete connection between early settlement and crafts and exchange, rather than reducing the history of the area to a single period.
The archaeological picture of the municipality also includes dozens of Thracian burial mounds, settlement remains and graves. Finds from the graves include pottery, women's jewelry and fragments of roof tiles. The remains of the Roman fortress of Balzena are located near Glavan. The complex stands on the 535-meter-high Gradishte peak, about two kilometers south of Glavan, and is considered a Byzantine and medieval defensive center. Only the remains of buildings at ground level are visible.
In the Erkesene area near the town of Galabovo are part of Khan Tervel's border ditch and the Roman Appia road. Together with the sites at Hisarlaka and Glavan, these places reveal different historical traces that can be considered as separate destinations when planning a trip.
Reservoir and Wildlife
Rozov Kladanets Reservoir is a landscape shaped by water engineering dating from the mid-20th century. It was created between 1957 and 1960 by two earth-fill dams. The hydraulic complex is next to the town of Galabovo; the reservoir is on the Sokolitsa River and receives inflows through water intakes from the Sokolitsa and the Sazliyka.
The national wetlands plan for 2013–2022 describes Rozov Kladanets and the adjoining areas as an important stopover for waterbirds during migration and in winter. The plan lists 142 bird species. Species recorded in the Sazliyka protected area include the otter, European ground squirrel, Roach's mouse-like hamster and marbled polecat. Taking a boat onto the reservoir before sunrise can disturb birds resting on the water.
