Two rivers cross Gurkovo on their way from the Balkan Mountains to the Tundzha: the Lazova and Radova rise in the mountains, flow through the town and empty into the river. An eco-hiking trail, 15 kilometres long with a stated duration of eight hours, offers a different measure of time. There is also a museum with objects from the region and the history of donkey keeping, as well as archaeological traces spanning antiquity to the Middle Ages. Gurkovo can thus be explored through its landscape, activities and culture.
Location and regional connections
Gurkovo Municipality is in central Bulgaria, in Stara Zagora Province, on the eastern edge of the Rose Valley and at the southern end of the Republican Pass, also known as the Hainboaz Pass. The I-6 main road crosses the municipality along the Sofia–Kazanlak–Gurkovo–Burgas route. The II-55 road also crosses the municipality, connecting Ruse–Veliko Tarnovo–Gurkovo–Svilengrad via the Republican Pass. The Sofia–Burgas railway line runs through Gurkovo, parallel to the I-6. Zhrebchevo Reservoir lies on the southern edge of the municipality. The two rivers, the reservoir and the named transport routes provide different points of reference for finding your way around the area.
Hiking trail with a clear time estimate
The “Lyava Reka–Predela” eco-hiking trail connects to the international “Kom–Emine” hiking trail. It is 15 kilometres long, with a stated duration of eight hours. Length and duration answer different planning questions: the kilometre figure gives the distance, while the time estimate indicates the planned time frame. There are three rest shelters with barbecue areas along the trail, as well as a spring with cold drinking water. These facilities add practical options for a break to the route information. Since facilities may change, check their current status before your hike.
Collection and cultural history
The Donkey Museum collection in Gurkovo includes household items from the region and objects related to keeping and using donkeys. These include carts, saddles, bags and reins, as well as ploughs and threshing equipment. The museum also has an archaeological section featuring finds from the area around Gurkovo. The collection spans the Thracian and Roman, Slavic and Proto-Bulgarian, and medieval periods. Another specific piece of cultural heritage in the town is the Church of “Sveti Dimitar”: built in 1860, it is a cultural monument.
Roman remains near Konare
A Roman villa rustica was excavated near the village of Konare in Gurkovo Municipality in 2017. The complex dates from the 2nd to the 4th century. Finds include a pool, a steam bath with underfloor heating, three changing rooms and a hot-air heating system fuelled by external fire pits. The dating establishes when the building was constructed; the rooms and heating methods also describe specific architectural features. These findings complement the museum’s broad historical periods with a specific location and a detailed account of a complex.
A stay by the Lazova River
The Lazovo recreation area is situated by the Lazova River in Gurkovo. Facilities include a bridge, a shelter for 20 to 30 people, tables and a barbecue area. There is also a children’s playground, swings and a sandpit. A large meadow is designated for camping, sports and cycling. Different activities are available in the same place: relaxing by the barbecue area, playing and making use of the open space for activities. Check the current status of the facilities before your visit.
