Makotsevo offers two perspectives for planning your trip: the history of the village and its landscape. The village’s history includes the Church of St. Dimitar the Great Martyr and the votive site of St. George; the Ihtiman Sredna Gora, the Makotsevska River and nearby Mount Opor form the landscape setting. This lets you decide whether to focus your stay on cultural history or the natural environment.
Church, Votive Monuments and Village History
Makotsevo is considered one of Bulgaria’s old villages and dates back to the beginning of the 15th century. The Church of St. Dimitar the Great Martyr was built in 1862, restored in 2003 and is a cultural monument. In the western part of Makotsevo is the votive site of St. George, with four stone votive monuments, including richly ornamented, upright examples. The site is considered an important monument of Bulgaria’s Christian commemorative stone sculpture. The church and votive monuments offer different points of cultural and historical interest: a church building with recorded construction and repair dates on the one hand, and a group of memorial stones on the other.
Landscape and Archaeological Traces
Makotsevo lies in the Ihtiman Sredna Gora. The Makotsevska River flows through the village area. Nearby Mount Opor reaches 1,089 metres; the remains of a Roman fortress stand on it. The local geography thus brings together a mountain landscape, a river and archaeological remains.
Horse Riding and Accommodation
A municipal tourism listing from 2018 described the Horseman Ranch in Makotsevo as offering hourly and half-day rides for beginners and advanced riders, accommodation in a guesthouse, children’s birthday parties and summer camps for children. Before planning, confirm which of these offers are currently available. The Horseman Ranch also offers a package of ten hours of individual riding lessons. This format differs from the hourly and half-day rides; check the current terms and availability before booking.
Getting There by Train
The timetable for 12 February 2026 lists stops at Makotsevo and Makotsevo Stop on the Sofia–Karlovo passenger service. Check the timetable for your travel date before setting off.
