Devin offers a variety of reasons to visit: river meanders, waterfalls, a protected gorge, striking rock formations and medieval traces. The Struilitsa–Kaleto–Lakata eco-trail provides a clear route for hikes; other natural attractions stand out for their elevation, protected status or geological formations.

Landscape Between River, Gorge and Rock

The Chairete protected area in the Trigrad area includes six natural landslide lakes. The Trigrad Gorge is a 7-kilometre-long protected ravine carved through marble rock by the Trigradska River north of Trigrad. Both places represent different types of landscape in the Devin area.

The elevation and the shape of individual rocks also add distinctive features. Nastanska Mogila is a 3-hectare rock formation at an elevation of 1,200 metres. Its distinctive rocky ridge ends in a shape resembling a trunk. The Stara Gora (Shabanitsa) nature reserve lies in the Trigrad area at an elevation of 1,700 to 1,800 metres. Check local visitor access before planning a visit.

The waterfalls offer different experiences: Struilski Dol is a waterfall on a river in the Devin area, with a drop of 3 metres. In Devil’s Throat Cave, by contrast, the Trigradska River forms a 42-metre-high underground waterfall.

Hiking by the River and Practical Route Information

The Struilitsa–Kaleto–Lakata eco-trail starts in the Struilitsa locality and follows the river meanders. Metal bridges over the river are also part of the route. The main trail is about 4 kilometres long; a shorter side trail leads to Samodivsko Praskalo waterfall in approximately 30 minutes.

For planning, these are two different kinds of information: an approximate distance is given for the main trail, while an approximate walking time is given for the side trail to the waterfall. Take care not to confuse the two. Trail and bridge conditions can change, so check conditions before setting out.

Another nature-based option is the Balkan trout fishing zone in the protected area of the Devinska River valley. It is about 3 kilometres long. If you plan to fish, check the local regulations beforehand, as they may change.

Gorge, Caves and Getting There

The road to Trigrad runs through the gorge and is a typical single-lane mountain road with two-way traffic. Conditions may vary by season. A narrow asphalt road through the gorge leads to the entrance to Devil’s Throat Cave; there is a small car park in front of the entrance. Check current road and parking conditions before your visit.

The Haramiyska Cave is also located in the Trigrad area. It is a shaft-type cave and is considered an attraction on the boundary between classic and extreme tourism. The Stara Gora nature reserve is a different destination: its elevation is known, but you should check local visitor access.

As a broader point of reference, the Shiroka Laka–Devin–Borino tourist route runs east to west through Devin Municipality. This direction may be helpful when planning a trip that includes several places. Check the current route before setting out.

History and Culture in Devin

Devin’s historical museum collection preserves around 2,000 exhibits of local and national significance. If you want to plan a museum visit, check current visitor access in advance.

Kavursko Kale, also known as Kaleto, is designated as a cultural monument of local importance. The fortress existed from the 6th to the 13th century. There was also a medieval settlement in the Lakata locality. These two sites offer a historical perspective on Devin that differs from its natural attractions and hiking routes.
