Transmarisca, the fishing quarter, and Danube Park reveal three different sides of Tutrakan: Roman fortress history, traditional fishing crafts, and an extensive waterfront area. This picture is complemented by the PoĹľarevo Islands Protected Area and cultural sites such as Ali Baba Teke in Varnentsi and the memorial complex in Shumenzi. If you are looking for accommodation in Tutrakan, you can choose the focus of your trip according to whether you are primarily interested in archaeological structures, local traditions, river scenery, or commemorative history.

Transmarisca and the Fishing Heritage

The Roman settlement of Transmarisca was founded in the 1st century AD; its remains lie beneath modern-day Tutrakan. The archaeological features of the site include restored Tower No. 1, with a western gate. The southern fortress wall has two defensive towers. These details refer to different parts of the structure: the gate belongs to the restored tower, while the two defensive towers are part of the southern wall. This offers a way to explore the fortress through both its historical context and specific architectural features.

Tutrakan’s fishing quarter preserves fishing nets, boatbuilding workshops, and fishermen’s houses in authentic form. Together, these elements represent fishing equipment, boatbuilding, and homes—the three facets of the fishing tradition. The quarter complements the Roman fortress history with a heritage of local craftsmanship.

The Historical Museum is housed in the Teodorova House. The art gallery displays works of visual art from 1985 to 2017; specific exhibitions may change. The cultural subjects described thus range from archaeological remains and a historic home to a more recent, clearly defined period of visual art.

Riverside Park and the Island Archipelago

Danube Park occupies almost the entire waterfront area of the city, stretching from west to east as far as the port and the last boatyard. Its described features include riverside paths, gardens, art installations, and children’s areas. Its expanse along the waterfront sets the park apart from a single structure: here, riverside paths, landscaped gardens, and art installations come together.

The PoĹľarevo Islands Protected Area forms a Danube archipelago near Tutrakan, with forests, low vegetation, bays, and river channels. It includes the eastern part of Goljam Kosuj Island, the entire island of Malak Kosuj, and smaller islands. This distinction is noteworthy: only part of Goljam Kosuj is included, whereas Malak Kosuj is included in its entirety. The island area therefore offers a different landscape focus from the landscaped waterfront of Danube Park.

The reservoir near Antimovo is suitable for recreational fishing. Conditions may vary by season; take this into account when planning the activity.

Traditions and Other Cultural Sites

The Feast of St. Nicholas in Tutrakan includes a procession and the blessing of the Danube waters. The festival also features a competition for fish dishes prepared by amateur cooks. Religious tradition and culinary culture come together here. If you would like to plan your trip around the festival, check the event dates in advance.

Ali Baba Teke in Varnentsi was founded in the 17th century. The “Tutrakan Epic” Memorial Complex in Shumenzi presents the battles of the Dobrudzha Front with a 3D map and a 360-degree film recreating the attack on Fort No. 6. The two sites offer different historical perspectives: religious heritage in Varnentsi and a multimedia portrayal of the front-line battles in Shumenzi. Check the memorial complex’s current opening arrangements before traveling there.
