The Garvan Marshes, the Danube riverside landscape and the village churches give Sitovo a clear focus on nature and culture. The municipality’s tourism programme is geared towards short weekend visits for relaxation and peace, especially in spring, summer and early autumn. Sitovo is the administrative centre of Sitovo Municipality in Silistra Province. The municipality lies in the northwest of the province and covers 270.97 square kilometres.

Plains, marshes and the Danube Riverbank

The Popina-Garvan Lowland stretches between Garvan and Popina in the northern part of the municipality. It covers around ten square kilometres and lies at an elevation of about 12 to 40 metres. The Garvan Marshes protected area is located in the lands of Garvan and Popina: agricultural and wooded areas alternate across its 280 hectares. The area is considered suitable for nature-focused visits; check the condition of the infrastructure locally.

Birds that can be observed in the marshes include grebes, swans, coots, wild ducks and wild geese. White and yellow water lilies, as well as narrow-leaved and broad-leaved cattails, characterise the plant life. Garvan Island, near the village, is home to colonies of white herons and pelicans; willows, poplars and basket willows grow there, and the marsh snowdrop is also notably present. Bird populations may vary seasonally and from year to year.

On the Danube riverbank opposite Garvan are linden forests, a stretch of beach and two wooded islands. This landscape offers opportunities for nature excursions, river tourism and sport fishing. The different natural settings—marsh, islands and riverside forest—make Sitovo appealing to travellers who want to spend time outdoors, without implying a particular route or access to specific places.

Cycling, fishing and trails

The EuroVelo 06 cycling route along the Danube passes through Sitovo Municipality. Signage and surface conditions may change; check local conditions when planning your route. Near Dobrotitsa, a built eco-trail leads to Ostrata Kanara. Check the condition of the trail and access locally. A protected site for wild peonies and the Ostrata Kanara protected area are also nearby.

Sport fishing is permitted in the Garvan Marshes from 1 August to 15 February, subject to the protected area’s rules. Check the regulations currently in force before fishing. The Emilovo fishing settlement on the Danube is considered a place for relaxation and fishing; a makeshift pier offers views of the Garvan Islands. Facilities and access may change, so it is worth checking before your visit.

Village culture and history

Popina has the Church of St George the Victorious, a community centre with a women’s singing group, and a museum exhibition focusing on cultural themes. The Kaleto locality in the village is described as the site of a Roman military camp between Durostorum, present-day Silistra, and Transmarisca, present-day Tutrakan. Remains of the Roman road are still visible.

Garvan’s St Dimitar Church was built between 1887 and 1892 from white stone using local funds; the builders came from Troyan. The village also has a museum and an ethnographic collection. Local crafts include mat weaving and the making of Dobrudzhan folk costumes. A house furnished in the old Dobrudzhan style offers accommodation to tourists; attached to it is a mill with a German diesel engine dating from 1920.

In Dobrotitsa, the Church of Saints Cyril and Methodius was completed in 1900 and consecrated on 11 May 1901. Its builders, stonemasons and icon painters came from Macedonia. The churchyard contains symbolic graves, known as cenotaphs. Across the municipality, there are twelve cultural centres with singing and dance groups, folklore groups, clubs, exhibition halls and museum collections. The recurring Danube Festival in Popina is usually held in summer, during the first ten days of August, on the riverbank. Traditional competitions include swimming across the Danube and crossing a greased beam over the water; dates and programme items may change from year to year.

Planning your stay

The tourism concept for 2021 to 2027 presents Sitovo in terms of nature, culture, history, rural experiences and relaxation. For a weekend, you can choose a focus: the landscape of the Garvan Marshes, cycling along the Danube, fishing during the stated season, or village culture and churches. If you would like to include wine, Dobrotitsa is home to Oprev Winery, described as having a closed production cycle from grape to bottle and a guesthouse for wine tourism. Check the current status of the winery and accommodation before planning a visit or overnight stay.
