Nikolovo offers a variety of reasons to visit: the artificial reservoir on the Saradjiyska, the linden-rich Lipnik Forest Park, an eco-trail with named endpoints, and recurring folklore events. For planning, it is worth considering your travel dates, how to reach the trail, and the specific event separately.

Water, Forest and Accommodation

The Nikolovo Reservoir is an artificial body of water on the Saradjiyska, with a water length of about 1,450 metres. Lipnik Forest Park is in the Nikolovo area, ten kilometres east of Ruse. It is located in a woodland area dominated by linden trees, covering approximately 20,000 decares; the site began to be developed as a park in the 1950s. At the reservoir, the water length and connection to the river are key; at the park, the linden forest, woodland area and development since the 1950s take centre stage. One decare equals 1,000 square metres; the woodland area therefore covers around 20 million square metres.

Lipnik Forest Park also has a camping area among its facilities. Check its current availability before your trip if you are planning to stay there.

Eco-Trail and Getting There

The eco-trail connects Lipnik Forest Park in Nikolovo with the Minzuhar Hut. A section that was previously impassable has been made accessible; as trail conditions can change, check them before setting out. The endpoints are accessible by bus routes 10 and 33, as well as the Ruse–Nikolovo intercity route. As timetables can change, check the service to the endpoint where you plan to start or finish. If you hike between the two endpoints, also consider your return journey: what matters is which connection works for your destination on the day of your trip.

A temporary traffic regulation published on 26 March 2026 prohibits vehicles with a permissible gross vehicle weight over 3.5 tonnes from travelling on the Nikolovo dam section. Check before travelling whether this restriction is still in force.

Folklore Events

The National Folklore Festival “Scene Under the Lindens” is traditionally held in Lipnik Forest Park. It lasts for two consecutive days in June; the dates may vary from one edition to another. The festival is competitive and features dance, music and authentic folklore groups from northern Bulgaria. If this is the main focus of your visit, the exact dates of the edition matter: plan around the specific dates, not June alone.

Another annual cultural event is the traditional gathering on 2 August, Ilinden, also in Lipnik Forest Park. Unlike the two-day June festival, this event is held on a specific calendar date. The two events offer different visiting windows: a festival date that varies in June, and the annual gathering on 2 August.
