The Dimitar Kovachev Paleontological Museum displays an almost 45-metre-long skeleton of an ancient Deinotherium. It was found near the village of Ezerovo, close to Pervomay. This means that one of Asenovgrad’s cultural and historical perspectives reaches far back into the past, while other exhibitions explore regional history and everyday urban life.

From Prehistory to City History

The Asenovgrad Historical Museum presents the region’s history chronologically, from the Palaeolithic to the present day. Renovated in 2005, the exhibition focuses on archaeology, Bulgarian history from the 15th to the 19th century, and modern and recent history. The chronological overview and thematic explorations offer two scales: a broad span of time and selected chapters of history.

The Ethnographic House shifts the focus from this broad span of time to urban everyday life from the late 19th to the early 20th century. Rather than a comprehensive chronological narrative, the focus here is on everyday life in the city. You can thus encounter different perspectives: a long historical arc, distinctive archaeological topics and life in a particular era.

River Landscape and Fortress Architecture

Asenovgrad Municipality extends along both banks of the Asenitsa River, also known as the Chepelarska and Chaya. Above Asenovgrad lies Asenova Fortress (Asenovata krepost), a cultural monument of national significance. The river landscape and the fortress provide two distinct points of reference for understanding the municipality geographically and in terms of its cultural history.

The Church of St. Mary of Petrich (Sveta Bogoroditsa Petrichka) is located within the fortress. One historical interpretation regards it as the first Eastern Orthodox church to have been built with a tower. The church thus links its location within the fortress with a distinctive place in architectural history.

The municipal themed route “Rodopska Sveta gora” consists of four interconnected tourist routes. Its structure presents not just a single path, but a themed trail comprising several connected routes. Visitors looking for information about tourist sites in the municipality or tourism-related events can find it at the Asenovgrad Tourist Information Centre.

In the Wider Travel Destination of Plovdiv Province

The Plovdiv region encompasses the Upper Thracian Plain, parts of the Rhodope and Sredna Gora mountains, sub-Balkan valleys and the Balkan Mountains. Belintash is a natural monument in the Plovdiv region, located in Asenovgrad Municipality near the village of Sini Vrah. Thus, the wider travel destination of Plovdiv Province brings together a variety of landscapes and a specific natural monument within the municipality.

The Bachkovo Monastery of the Dormition of the Mother of God is also part of the region’s character: it is one of the notable spiritual landmarks in the Plovdiv region and one of Bulgaria’s 100 national tourist sites. Plovdiv is the geographical and logistical centre of the Thracian tourism region. The city is also a major international railway hub and part of European transport corridors of national and international importance.
