The monastery is at the heart of a visit to Dobri Dol, bringing Bulgarian sacred architecture and history together. The church, a chapel with the Ayazmo, and a large stone fountain offer tangible points of interest; details range from medieval origins to the architecture of the Bulgarian National Revival.

Monastery history and church architecture

The monastery was founded in the 11th century as a spiritual centre. It was destroyed in the 15th century and later restored by Pimen Zografski. The ecclesiastical apostolate of Antim Vidinski is also associated with the monastery: he was the first Exarch after the restoration of the Bulgarian Church. These milestones provide a historical timeline for the monastery.

The monastery church has an almost square, cruciform plan; at the same time, it is single-nave and has a single apse. The dome rests on an octagonal drum. The drum forms the dome’s base and stands out as a feature in its own right. The church is considered a rare example of Bulgarian National Revival architecture in religious buildings.

Stone reliefs depicting people, birds and archangels adorn the church’s western exterior wall. A large stone fountain stands at the monastery entrance; it was built in 1861 with funds from the Lom Bakers’ Guild. The reliefs are part of the church building, while the fountain is a datable work from the 19th century.

A chapel dedicated to Saints Cosmas and Damian houses the monastery spring, known as the Ayazmo. The monastery complex thus brings together church architecture, artworks and a named spring as distinct aspects of its religious history.

Accommodation and getting oriented

A municipal tourism strategy for 2014–2020 lists guest rooms at the monastery. If you are considering this accommodation, check its current availability in advance before making it the basis of your overnight plans.

Dobri Dol lies on the II-11 road corridor towards Lom and Gorni Tsibar. Check current road conditions before setting out, as construction work and driving conditions can change. Four old Turkey oaks are also associated with Dobri Dol.

Cultural attractions in the wider destination of Lom

The wider destination of Lom has other distinct cultural attractions. The Historical Museum in Lom was founded on 20 September 1925 as the local archaeological society “Almus”. The ancient city of Almus lies north of Lom on the banks of the Danube. The archaeological site includes an early and late Roman fortress, an early Byzantine fortified settlement and an associated necropolis. Almus is designated an immovable archaeological cultural monument of national importance.

Another historic building in Lom is the watchtower. Built in 1879, it is considered the first tower of its kind in Bulgaria and houses a museum on the history of firefighting. The Cathedral Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is the largest church in Lom. Construction began in 1863; it was completed between 1894 and 1897 and solemnly consecrated in the summer of 1906. Since 1974, it has been designated an architectural cultural monument.

Cyclists can also find a municipality-wide connection: the Lom Municipality tourism strategy for 2014–2020 lists two cycling routes that can be used with your own or a rented bicycle. Check that the routes are currently available before planning your trip.
