Almus refers to two different historical contexts in Lom: the ancient city on the banks of the Danube north of Lom, and the local archaeological society under whose name the Historical Museum was founded. Churches with precisely dated building histories, a watchtower with a fire service museum and designated architectural monuments round out these topics. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Lom, you can plan around whichever focus interests you most: antiquity, museum history or architecture.

Antiquity and Museum History

The ancient city of Almus lies in the north of Lom on the banks of the Danube. It is designated an immovable archaeological cultural site of national importance. The complex comprises an early and a late Roman fort, an early Byzantine fortified settlement and an associated necropolis. These three named components give the archaeological site a clear structure and span a period from Roman to early Byzantine contexts. For travellers interested in antiquity, Almus provides a specific historical focus.

The Historical Museum in Lom was founded on 20 September 1925 as the local archaeological society “Almus”. Here, the name refers to the museum’s founding history, not to the ancient city. The museum departments include archaeology, Bulgaria in the 15th to 19th centuries, modern history, ethnography and art. The permanent exhibition is arranged thematically across two floors of the museum building; its presentation may change over time. In terms of content, this broad range of topics complements antiquity with other perspectives on history, society and art.

Churches, Watchtower and Architecture

The Cathedral Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is the largest church in Lom. Construction began in 1863; it was completed between 1894 and 1897, and was solemnly consecrated in the summer of 1906. It has been designated an architectural cultural monument since 1974. The sequence of construction, completion, consecration and subsequent monument designation offers several specific points of reference for the church’s building history.

The Church of St. Nicholas the Elder, also known as Borunskata Tsarkva, is another part of Lom’s documented history: it was restored in 1885 and has been designated a cultural monument since 1975. The two churches thus represent different milestones in construction and monument designation. The watchtower, built in 1879, offers another perspective. It is considered the first tower of its kind in Bulgaria and houses a museum on the history of the fire service. Church construction, monument history and the fire service therefore offer different themes for a cultural and historical trip.

The architectural perspective also extends to the whole municipality of Lom, where 57 buildings are designated architectural cultural monuments. They were built between 1880 and 1940, and their designs are by Austrian, Belgian, German and Hungarian architects. The styles identified are late Art Nouveau and Neo-Baroque. The figure refers to the buildings in the municipality, not to a single building. Together with the information about the churches, this provides a broader perspective on building history and different design styles.
