The municipality of Teteven brings together the Vit Valley, wooded slopes and varied trails. The valley lies between the peaks of Petrakhil, Cherven and Treskavets in the Zlatishko-Teteven Mountains. Elevations range from 340 to 2,100 metres; beech-covered slopes shape parts of the mountain and foothill landscape.

Woodland and Wildlife

Parts of Central Balkan National Park lie within the municipality, including the Boatin and Tsarichina reserves. Part of the Kozya Stena Reserve lies in Ribaritsa. Tsarichina itself is located in the area of Ribaritsa and covers the upper catchment of the Beli Vit, including its tributaries Stara Ribaritsa and Zavodna.

The reserve protects a self-sustaining forest and subalpine ecosystem with natural stands of the Balkan-endemic white pine. Its wildlife includes more than 90 bird species and seven owl species characteristic of the Bulgarian mountains. Tsarichina’s landscape can be experienced along the entire hike between the Vezhen and Eho huts.

Hiking Trails and Outdoor Activities

A trail from the centre of Teteven follows the Koznitsa River through woodland, crosses four wooden bridges and leads to Skoka Waterfall. From Ribaritsa, marked hiking trails reach Kostina in about two hours, Benkovski Hut in about five hours, Vezhen Hut and Vezhen Peak in about seven hours, and Eho Hut in about six hours. These times provide a concrete guide for comparing the different destinations and the time required for each.

Another route towards Tsarichina starts at Neftohima. It is about six kilometres long, takes around five hours and passes Sloncheto and Merudievi Zubi; Golyama Shalya offers panoramic views. Check route conditions and seasonal accessibility before setting out. Mountain trails also lead from Vezhen Hut to Vezhen Peak and to Benkovski, Eho, Kozya Stena and Momina Polyana huts.

The Beli Vit and its tributaries offer opportunities for fishing and, in summer, swimming along the riverbanks. Rock formations near Teteven are suitable for climbing. Alongside the longer mountain trails, visitors can choose to focus on activities by the water or among the rocks.

Culture, Crafts and History

The Teteven Historical Museum was founded in 1911, and its exhibition is divided into archaeology, ethnography and the Bulgarian National Revival. Topics include local woodcarving, weaving and goldsmithing, as well as regional folk costumes, embroidery and decorative buckles. The collection comprises around 4,600 exhibits.

The Church of All Saints in the centre of Teteven houses icons by several masters, including Stanislav Dospevski, and a wood-carved iconostasis by Petar Kanchev. A church service held by Vasil Levski in 1870 is also associated with the church. The museum in Cherni Vit displays a copy of Georgi Benkovski’s Flag No. 9, along with an ethnographic collection of household items and tools from the 19th century.

The Teteven Art Gallery preserves works by local artists, including pieces by Vasil Gachev and Sabo Dimitrov. Visitors can also learn more about traditional crafts: demonstrations by woodcarvers, pyrographers, turners, weavers, embroiderers, crocheters and saddlers can be arranged. Check before your trip whether the demonstration you want is available.

Facilities at the Vezhen Visitor Centre include a children’s play area, a rope course, a climbing wall, a green classroom and bilingual information panels about Central Balkan National Park and the Tsarichina Reserve. Check before your visit which facilities and services are available.

The Monastery of St. George in Glozhene is also designated a cultural monument of national importance. A municipal tourist route includes the monastery as part of an approximately three-hour driving excursion.
