In Barakovo, industrial and ecclesiastical history meet a river landscape. Nearby, the Stob Pyramids add views of the Rila Valley and snow-capped peaks. The town offers different focuses for planning a trip: the development of the Balabanov Factory, ecclesiastical heritage, and opportunities to explore the surrounding landscape.

The Balabanov Factory: from sawmill to paper production

The Balabanov Factory’s industrial complex began with a sawmill built near Barakovo in 1902–1903. Later, separate steps were taken to produce paper and cardboard: the cardboard factory began operating on January 1, 1929, and the paper factory opened on May 6, 1937. These milestones show how the complex developed over time from an early sawmill into later production facilities.

Following German examples, the paper factory produced various types of paper and cardboard. The newly established museum at the Balabanov Factory is an example of significant cultural heritage and documents paper production through scale models of machinery, various tools and objects, and one of Ivan Balabanov’s carriages. The exhibits thus focus both on production and on objects from the factory’s history.

The museum also includes an authentically reconstructed train. It represents trains from the early days of the narrow-gauge railway from Kocherinovo to Kirilova Polyana. Together with the models and tools, it broadens the view of industrial history to include the railway of that era. The exhibition topics can therefore be distinguished: it is not only about paper, but also about the objects and means of transport connected with the history of the complex.

Churches and local tradition

The Church of the Dormition of the Mother of God in Barakovo is more than a hundred years old. Until 1913, the building served as an Ottoman customs post; it was then converted into a church. This sequence connects two very different uses of the same site. The church is located directly beside the bridge over the Rilska.

Distinct from this are the preserved remains of a church in the Tsarkveto area near Barakovo. Local tradition associates the ruins with the veneration of Saint Theodore. Thus, two different aspects of ecclesiastical history stand side by side: the conversion of a former customs post into a church and a local memory associated with church ruins.

Archaeological finds are also part of the area’s history: excavations there uncovered a Roman marketplace with more than 3,100 Late Antique coins. This find offers another historical perspective alongside the more recent evidence of the factory’s and the churches’ histories.

The Stob Pyramids and the Rilska

Near Barakovo, visitors can explore the Stob Pyramids via a marked eco-trail and a maintained cart track. The pyramids offer views of the Rila Valley, the river, the approaches to the Rila Monastery, and snow-capped mountain peaks. These routes and views make the pyramids a distinct landscape attraction alongside the town’s historical sites.

The Rilska flows through Barakovo within the municipality of Kocherinovo. The river is part of the town’s geographical setting; views of it from the Stob Pyramids offer another perspective on the surrounding landscape.

Choose a focus for your stay

If you are considering Barakovo as a travel destination, you can shape your stay around your interests: the Balabanov Factory offers insights into paper and industrial history, the church and Tsarkveto offer different ecclesiastical sites, and the Stob Pyramids offer landscapes and views. When looking for accommodation in Barakovo, this distinction can help you decide what to focus on. This lets you choose which topics matter most for your trip without imposing a fixed order on them.
