Explore Boboshevo through its history and landscapes: churches showcase different architectural styles, archaeological traces reach far back in time, and trails lead to springs, caves and views of the river and mountains. When planning your trip, you can decide whether to focus on architectural history, older settlement traces or nature.

Churches and Architectural History

The Church of the Holy Mother of God dates from the Bulgarian National Revival and features unusual architecture with ten columns and eighteen domes. It is an active place of worship as well as a cultural monument. The distinctive number of columns and domes gives the building its own architectural character.

In the upper part of Boboshevo, near the cemetery, stands the Church of Saint Athanasius. It may have been built in 1590 or 1600. The Church of St Demetrius is one of the few surviving examples from the 15th century. The Church of St Theodore, near Boboshevo, dates back to the 10th to 12th centuries. Two layers of wall paintings have been identified; the earlier fresco layer has been destroyed.

Older Traces and Nearby Sites

West of Boboshevo, the medieval Gradishteto Fortress on Dragoyna Hill preserves remains of its walls. It dates from the Second Bulgarian Empire. A much older settlement existed at the Mardishte archaeological site, in and north of Boboshevo. The historical sites therefore range from an ancient settlement to medieval fortifications.

The chapels are also found in different locations. The Chapel of Saint George stands outside Boboshevo on the road to Dragodan, at the site of an older church. The Chapel of Saint Michael the Archangel is on the ridge of the southern Ruen slope. It was built after the Liberation on the site of an earlier church.

Nature and Landscape

The meadows of Boboshevo are globally significant for the protection of the corncrake. The eco-trail offers another way to enjoy nature: it passes the Ayazmoto spring and the Cave of Saint John of Rila, with views towards the Struma River and the surrounding mountains. Trail conditions and access may change seasonally; check the situation before setting out.

The municipality of Boboshevo includes part of the Rila Mountains, the northern slopes of the Ruen Mountains and a section of the tectonic Struma Valley. At the municipal level, this gives the area a broader landscape setting than the city alone. Within the land of the city of Boboshevo, the protected area “Site of the Woolly-flowered Milk-vetch – Boboshevo” protects the population and habitat of the woolly-flowered milk-vetch. This botanical protection complements the picture of the meadows and their importance for bird conservation.

The Ruen Monastery of Saint John of Rila is connected by a scenic trail to the cave associated with the saint’s early activities. Above the monastery, in Boboshevo Municipality, a small rock niche lies in the forest, roofed by a stone wall. Locals venerate it as the first hermit cave of Saint John of Rila; it is about a ten-minute walk from the monastery.
