The historic protected area extends across Old Nessebar on the peninsula. Access is via the narrow isthmus that connects the Old and New Towns. The destination of Nessebar has hotels, restaurants, shops and a tourist information centre. This provides a practical starting point when choosing accommodation: you can decide whether the historic area should be the main focus of your trip. Individual businesses may change.

Churches and historic buildings

In Old Nessebar, visitors can see numerous preserved religious monuments, including the Church of Christ Pantocrator. The historic town is associated with 23 churches; some have been converted into museums, while others have been restored for visitors. These different uses offer more than one way to experience the town’s churches: in addition to preserved religious buildings, museum spaces also form part of its cultural character.

The wider Nessebar destination

Within the wider Nessebar destination, the architectural and historical reserve of the Old Town extends across a peninsula 850 metres long and 350 metres wide. The Church of Christ Pantocrator stands in the centre of the Old Town and was built in the 13th to 14th centuries. The Church of St Stephen, also known as the New Metropolis, dates to a different period: it was built in the 11th to 13th centuries. This makes it possible to distinguish between different construction periods within the region’s cultural heritage.

Other cultural attractions offer different points of interest. The Archaeological Museum in Nessebar presents material culture from Mesambria, Mesemvria and Nessebar, spanning antiquity, the Middle Ages and the Bulgarian National Revival. The Moskoiani House has an ethnographic exhibition featuring traditional costumes and textiles from the Burgas region. The old part of Nessebar also invites visitors to stroll along narrow, cobbled streets lined with small shops selling handmade souvenirs, knitwear, crochet items and jewellery.

The wider Nessebar destination also includes seasonal activities and protected natural areas. In Ravda, summer sports schools offer sailing, water skiing, windsurfing, rowing and swimming; programmes may vary by season. The Smirkite protected area in the Obzor region covers 58.9 hectares and protects a natural population of the European firethorn and its plant community. Kalinata lies in the areas of Kosharitsa and Tunkovo, covers 109.2 hectares and protects the summer snowflake and a plant community in a riverside forest. These examples add water sports and nature conservation to the area’s cultural profile.
