A Railway Station as a High-Altitude Landmark

Avramovo railway station is located in the municipality of Yakoruda at 1,267.4 metres above sea level and is the highest railway station on the Balkan Peninsula. This elevation makes it an unusual landmark for the municipality. Road II-84 also provides a concrete point of reference: between Razlog and Velingrad, it runs for 29 kilometres through the municipality and passes through the town of Yakoruda.

Rila, Lakes and Forest Conservation

The municipality of Yakoruda includes parts of the Rila Mountains and the Western Rhodopes, as well as the Mesta Valley. In the section of Rila National Park within the municipality, forests, high-altitude lakes and mountain meadows shape the landscape. The Yakoruda Lakes are named as a distinct group: three glacial lakes in the eastern part of Rila. Their number, origin and location give the lake complex a clear place within the wider mountain region. Another aspect of nature conservation can be seen in Bəlatsite. The protected area serves to conserve centuries-old white pines—so the focus here is on preserving these trees, alongside the lakes and mountain meadows as other landscape features.

Water and Trails from Treshtenik

The “Chesnensko Usoe” waterfall, also known as the “Yakoruda Waterfall,” is 15 to 16 metres high. A waterfall on the Chesna River in the municipality is also designated a natural monument. In the Banite area, there is a thermal water source with a flow rate of 32 litres per second and a temperature of 42 °C. Thus, Yakoruda’s water features range from glacial lakes and waterfalls to thermal waters.

The Treshtenik resort area lies 14 kilometres north of Yakoruda and is the starting point for numerous hiking routes, including trails to the Granchar and Zavrachitsa huts. There are also named routes for mountain biking: Treshtenik–Semkovo starts at the Treshtenik resort complex above Yakoruda. The description of the Treshtenik–Mochura route, dated 13 August 2024, describes it as suitable for beginners and even children. As trail conditions may change, check them before setting out.

Church, Ritual and Shared Culture

On the outskirts of Yakoruda stands the Djerzhdevden Church, also known as the Gergyovden Church; it is an early Christian church. A text dated 6 May 2026 reports that the “Topene na Belezi” ritual has been celebrated jointly by Christians and Muslims for eleven consecutive years and describes its revival by the local community. The emphasis here is on a tradition shared by the community, while the church offers a different way to explore the history of the place.

Cultural life in Yakoruda also takes various forms. A chitalishte is home to a women’s vocal group performing folk and old urban songs, a men’s folklore group, and children’s groups for folklore, modern and folk dances. Singing, folklore and dance thus stand alongside religious and communal traditions as other themes visitors can explore.

Those choosing Yakoruda as a destination can focus on different things: hiking destinations from Treshtenik and the Rila landscape offer a different experience from the early Christian church, the ritual or the cultural groups. The specific names and themes can help you identify your interests without prescribing a fixed itinerary.
