Razlog is the largest town in Razlog Municipality, in Bulgaria’s Blagoevgrad Region. Nature, museums, thermal springs and traditions all feature in a trip to the area; the Septemvri–Dobrinishte narrow-gauge railway also passes through Razlog. First consider which of these interests you would like to shape your stay.

Nature and Trails

The Bayuvi Dupki section of Pirin National Park includes parts of Razlog Municipality. It is home to pure stands of Balkan-endemic white pine as well as beech forests. These two forest types give the section a clear botanical focus: white pine is identified as endemic to the Balkans, while beech forests form a second, explicitly mentioned forest type. Anyone wishing to include nature in their travel plans will find a specific connection here to the forests of Pirin National Park.

The Samodivska Trail starts in Bachevo, is 15 kilometres long and leads to the Rusaliite area at an altitude of 2,300 metres. The Rila Primrose Trail offers a different nature experience: visitors can learn about a plant found exclusively in the Rila Mountains. The difference is clear when choosing between them: the Samodivska Trail focuses on the route and its destination, while the Rila Primrose Trail focuses on sharing knowledge about plants.

Museums, Monuments and Traditions

The Historical Museum Razlog preserves more than 5,000 exhibits from various periods. The Nikola Parapunov House, a cultural monument of national significance, is part of the museum. This offers two distinct cultural points of interest: a collection spanning a broad range of periods and a separately named monument.

The Ethnographic-Historical Museum in Banya displays pottery fragments from the 11th century BC and devotes a section to the entire cycle of linen production. This brings together two distinct museum themes: archaeological pottery fragments and the individual steps in a complete production cycle. In Dobarsko, the Church of Saints Theodore Tyron and Theodore Stratilat adds another cultural site; it dates from 1614.

The Kukeri celebration in Eleshnitsa takes place on the first day after Easter; many women wearing masks also take part. Since the date shifts with the Easter calendar, it is not tied to a fixed calendar date. The Banitsa Festival in Razlog celebrates banitsa, one of Bulgaria’s most traditional dishes. This makes it possible to contrast an Easter tradition with a culinary theme without reducing both occasions to the same kind of cultural experience. In Eleshnitsa, the St. George bas-relief can also be reached via a purpose-built path.

Thermal Springs and Water Attractions

The thermal springs offer different features. The spring in Banya reaches 54°C and is considered suitable for balneotherapy. The thermal spring in Bachevo is considered suitable for use in swimming pools. For travellers wishing to focus on thermal experiences, this offers a specific comparison: in Banya, the temperature and suitability for balneotherapy are key, while in Bachevo, the focus is on use in swimming pools.

Banya is also home to the Banya Water Attraction, a play area for children of all ages. It includes a hand-operated water pump and a triangular wooden channel. The play area thus offers a separate attraction specifically aimed at children, alongside the thermal springs. If you are travelling with children, you can take this distinction into account when choosing activities.
