Ognyanovo lies in the Mesta Valley, on the western slopes of the Dabrash section of the Rhodopes. Gotse Delchev, the nearest larger town, is 12 kilometres to the southwest. Ognyanovo is considered a balneological centre; a distinctive church and a range of cycling and hiking trails also help define the destination. When planning your stay, you can choose between thermal waters, outdoor activities and cultural heritage as your main focus.

Thermal Water and Mineral Bath

The thermal water source includes seven natural springs and two additional boreholes. The mineral water is hyperthermal, with a temperature of 40 °C. Its pH value is 9.3 and its total mineralisation is 0.27 g/l. These hydrochemical characteristics describe the water; if you are considering therapeutic use, consult a medical professional about whether it is suitable for you.

The municipal Ognyanovo Mineral Bath, also known as Selskite bani, has two therapeutic pools and ten permanently installed tubs. The facilities may change over time. Before visiting, check which pools and tubs will be available.

Landscape and Trails Around Ognyanovo

The climate is continental, with a marked Mediterranean influence. Leshten is ten kilometres from Ognyanovo and offers panoramic views of the Pirin Mountains. So, in addition to thermal waters, you can explore the surrounding landscape and nearby destinations.

The 15.6-kilometre Ognyanovo–Leshten cycling route is rated as having a low level of both technical difficulty and physical exertion. A longer option is the 27.4-kilometre Ognyanovo–Kovachevitsa mountain biking route. It can start in Ognyanovo and runs above the Kanina Valley. The route guides for both cycling routes date from 2016; trail conditions may change. Check the current state of the routes before setting out.

Near Garmen, the 13-kilometre Kaninska Eco Trail passes through rocky, forested terrain and connects natural and cultural heritage sites. Hiking options range from two to ten hours. This range offers different time options rather than specifying a single walking time for the trail. As trail conditions and signage may change, check them before your hike.

Church, Tradition and Roman Heritage

The Church of the Dormition of the Mother of God in Ognyanovo is a three-nave pseudo-basilica built into the ground. Its wall paintings were created by Dimitar Molerov in the 19th century. Alongside the thermal springs, the church’s architecture and paintings give the town a distinctive cultural focus.

The church’s traditional patronal feast is celebrated with a two-day event around 15 August, featuring concerts and wrestling matches. The annual programme may vary, so check the festival dates before visiting.

The ruins of Nicopolis ad Nestum are about a 15-minute drive from the Ognyanovo mineral baths; journey time depends on the route and traffic. Nicopolis ad Nestum is one of the few preserved ancient cities in Bulgaria and the only one from Roman times in the Rhodopes.
