Ognyanovo is a balneological center in the municipality of Garmen. Its mineral water is hyperthermal and 40°C; the thermal water area includes seven natural springs and two additional boreholes. This specific combination of temperature and different components makes Ognyanovo a distinctive starting point for travelers interested in thermal waters. The municipality also offers other points of interest: protected forests, rock formations, waterfalls and historic architecture.

Valley, mountain slopes and protected nature

The municipality of Garmen encompasses parts of the Mesta Valley and the western slopes of the Dabrash section of the Western Rhodopes. Ancient fir, beech and spruce forests are preserved in the Tamnata Gora Nature Reserve. The protected area lies in the Dabrash section, within the territory of Kovachevitsa. The Zagrade plane trees offer a different perspective: located in Zagrade, now a neighborhood of Garmen, they are over 600 years old and have been protected since 1968. The municipality's natural heritage thus ranges from ancient forest areas to individual, centuries-old trees.

Waterfalls, rock formations and karst

Siniya Vir is a cascade of waterfalls in the valley of the Kanina River, with blue-green pools. From Kovachevitsa, the waterfall can be reached via a one-hour walk westward. Kozijat Kamak is a protected natural landmark and a unique rock formation covering an area of about 300 m² in the territory of Kovachevitsa. The area around Kozijat Kamak attracts researchers and tourists and is associated with local scientific hypotheses. The area's panorama extends westward to the Kayaliiski Rocks and the distant peaks of Pirin. Rizova Dupka, meanwhile, is a karst gorge 10 to 12 meters deep. Vertical wooden ladders lead to a corridor 15 meters long and two meters wide. Check safety conditions before visiting.

Hikes with different time frames

The Kaninska Eco Trail offers hiking options lasting from two to ten hours. Its long loop runs from Kovachevitsa via Skrebatno and Gorno Dryanovo and back to Kovachevitsa. The one-hour walking time given for Siniya Vir contrasts with this broader range of hiking durations; this comparison helps put different time budgets into perspective. Check local conditions before setting out on the eco trail. Mountain hikes are also offered in Leshten—another starting point if you want to explore Garmen on foot.

Kovachevitsa and its architecture

The architecture also draws attention to specific dates. Kovachevitsa is the only architectural reserve in the municipality of Garmen. The reserve includes the Church of St. Nicholas, a monastery school and a secular school, 112 residential buildings and five outbuildings. The church was built in 1847; in 1900, it received a four-story bell tower. These two dates illustrate the sequence of the church's construction and the tower's later addition. At the same time, the different types of buildings show that the reserve is not limited to a single religious building.
