A former public jail, preserved railway history and recurring festivals offer different ways to experience Itapetininga’s culture. The themes range from heritage-listed buildings and a railway museum to events celebrating music and local cuisine.

Historic Buildings and City Tours

The building originally constructed as the city’s public jail now houses the Centro Cultural e Histórico de Itapetininga. It is listed for preservation by the Conselho de Defesa do Patrimônio Histórico (CONDEPHAAT), which recognizes its historical and cultural significance to Itapetininga. Igreja Nossa Senhora do Rosário is another historic cultural heritage site, associated with the presence and religious traditions of Itapetininga’s Black population. Together, the two sites offer different points of connection to the city’s history: the architectural history of a former municipal institution and the religious traditions of the Black population.

On August 8, 2026, the Instituto Histórico, Geográfico e Genealógico de Itapetininga (IHGGI) led a guided walk through the historic center. Architecture, old photographs and changes in the city’s development brought local history to life. Another way to explore is the city tour held during the municipality’s main tourist events. Dramatic re-enactments of historical events lead visitors to cultural landmarks; the tours are led by qualified guides who are experienced in working with the public.

Railway History at the Museu Ferroviário

The Museu Ferroviário is dedicated to preserving, caring for and sharing railway history. Its collection includes documents, photographs, paintings, tools, machinery and old communication devices used in railway operations. The museum is housed at the Clube Atlético dos Funcionários da Estrada de Ferro Sorocabana de Itapetininga (CASI), which was founded in 1945. The museum’s Steam Locomotive No. 7 provides a specific historical reference point: it was built by the German manufacturer Borsig in January 1912. In addition to written and visual records, machinery and tools are also central to the railway history on display.

Festivals, Crafts and Local Cuisine

The annual Cavalgada Itararé - Sorocaba welcomes participants in Itapetininga and retraces the original Tropeiro route. The Festival Sertanejo Teddy Vieira is also held annually, commemorating the composer who was born in Itapetininga in 1922. During Carnival, the annual Festival do Boteco introduces local cuisine to visitors. Each festival has a different focus: historic routes, musical heritage and food. As they take place during specific event periods, it is advisable to check the dates for your travel year and your accommodation’s availability.

The Feira de Artesanato de Itapetininga gives local craftspeople the opportunity to present their work to residents and tourists. It continues to take place at Praça Marechal Deodoro da Fonseca in the city center; the square is also known as Largo dos Amores. Both names refer to the same place. The craft fair can therefore be associated with a specific square in the city center when planning a visit.

Another food-related attraction is the Rota Gastronômica de SP. It is part of the state program Sabor de São Paulo and highlights artisanal smoked products and local breweries on national routes. Participating businesses and route details may change, so check the latest information before planning a specific culinary visit. Unlike the Festival do Boteco, which showcases local cuisine during Carnival, this route focuses on particular products and breweries.

Cycling Tourism Across the Municipality

The Projeto Ciclorrotas Itapetininga covers different areas of the municipality, with 18 interconnected cycling tourism routes through neighborhoods and rural roads. The described scope therefore includes different parts of the municipality. The inauguration of Praça do Ciclista marked the launch of the project; the square is near the roundabout at the beginning of Avenida Dr. Ciro de Albuquerque. Before planning a specific route, it is advisable to check its current course, as the route infrastructure may change.
