Mairinque brings together railway history, religious culture, and environmental themes. The historic heart of its railway heritage is the Estação Ferroviária de Mairinque: the building dates from 1906, was designed by Victor Dubugras, and is protected by CONDEPHAAT and IPHAN. The Museu Ferroviário de Mairinque is housed in the station building. The structure and museum therefore share a location; the year of construction, the design, and the protection status offer different reference points for understanding the station’s history.

Railway and Photographic History

The permanent photo exhibition “Nos Trilhos da Nossa Gente” is displayed on the exterior walls of the AMPF (Associação Mairinquense de Preservação Ferroviária) clubhouse. Its historical images relate to the founding of Vila Mayrink; the exhibition helps preserve Mairinque’s intangible historical heritage. This photographic perspective complements the building and museum by offering another form of local history.

Churches, History, and Feast Day

Igreja São José in Mairinque was inaugurated on April 23, 1936. The dates should be understood differently from the 1906 construction year of the Estação: for the station, the date refers to the year it was built; for the church, it is the date of its inauguration. These are two historical reference points with different roles for their respective dates.

The Festa do Bolo de São José takes place every year on March 19 at Praça da Matriz. Blessed cake is sold during the celebration, and the proceeds support the church’s work. If you plan to travel for the Festa, check the details of that year’s edition in advance. Another religious site is Capela Santa Rita de Cássia in Horto Florestal de Mairinque.

Environmental and Educational Themes

Located within the Área de Proteção Ambiental de Itupararanga, Casa das Guardiãs is a cultural, educational, and regenerative space in Mairinque. Its approach combines hands-on and educational experiences with agroecology, traditional knowledge, and environmental protection. This focus connects environmental issues with cultural knowledge and differs from the station’s more architectural and historical emphasis. The term agroecology draws attention to agriculture as well as environmental protection: it connects ecological relationships with the question of how agriculture is practiced, helping explain Casa’s practical focus.

Parque Municipal do Horto Florestal is a green space of ecological and social importance to the people of Mairinque and the region. It is intended for ecological, educational, and recreational use. Unlike Casa’s hands-on approach, the Parque focuses on the planned uses of the green space.
