Bom Jesus dos Perdões brings together the history of the Santuário do Senhor Bom Jesus dos Perdões with natural attractions and outdoor activities. Its construction spanned 170 years, providing a long historical backdrop; there are also specific details to help you plan your time on a trail and a footpath. This lets you treat culture and exercise as distinct focuses of your trip.

The Sanctuary and its history

The former Bom Jesus do Perdão chapel is now called the Santuário do Senhor Bom Jesus dos Perdões. It was built of rammed earth; construction work spanned 170 years and involved the labor of enslaved people. The material, duration, and history of the labor are all part of the building’s story.

In 1913, the chapel was elevated to the Santuário Arquiepiscopal do Senhor Bom Jesus dos Perdões. Its current name and this former ecclesiastical designation represent different points in its history. Those interested in the Sanctuary can explore both its construction history and its later elevation.

Nature trails and activities

Waterfalls and native forests suitable for hiking are part of Bom Jesus dos Perdões’ natural offerings. Notable natural attractions include Pedra do Coração and Mirante dos Camargos. Pedra Grande is also a landmark destination: it lies on the border with Atibaia and is used or visited by hang-gliding enthusiasts. Conditions for this activity can vary; if hang gliding is a focus for you, check conditions in advance.

The Trilha da Pedra Rachada lies on the border between Atibaia and Bom Jesus dos Perdões, in a remnant of high-altitude Atlantic Forest vegetation. Visitors are drawn by nature watching, climbing, and rappelling. The linear trail takes an average of one hour to walk round trip. This is distinct from the footpath from Pedra Grande to Pedra Rachada, which is listed as taking ten minutes. The two time estimates therefore refer to different routes and help you gauge how long each outing will take.

Routes and getting around the area

The Estrada da Pedra Grande runs partly through Atibaia and partly through Bom Jesus dos Perdões. Activities along the road include off-road vehicle trips, cycling tours, motorcycle rides, walks, and hikes. There are various ways to experience the route; these should not be confused with the specific walking times for the Trilha da Pedra Rachada.

Nearby is Cachoeira do Barrocão, six kilometers from downtown Bom Jesus dos Perdões. It can be reached via Estrada da Cachoeirinha, which begins at the end of Avenida São João. Road conditions can change, so check them before setting out. Mirante da Pedra do Coração is seven kilometers from downtown and at an elevation of approximately 1,300 meters. The distances to both destinations are measured from downtown; the lookout’s elevation is approximate.

Religious culture and festivals

Bom Jesus dos Perdões is part of the Circuito Turístico e Religioso Entre Serras e Águas. Local culture also includes a craft fair, which is especially prominent during community festivities. If you want to include the fair in your travel plans, check in advance which festivities fall during your travel dates.

The traditional Festa do Padroeiro was scheduled to take place from July 31 to August 9, 2026. Its program combined faith, culture, music, and leisure activities for the whole family. These details refer to the 2026 Festa do Padroeiro; they do not establish dates for other years.
