Porto de Galinhas combines experiences on the water with routes and insights into nature and village life. You can choose between time on the water, guided nature exploration and a walk alongside local businesses. When planning, it makes a difference whether you schedule an approximately one-hour Jangada tour, a longer reef experience or routes on land.
Natural Pools, Jangadas and Reefs
The natural pools have warm, crystal-clear water. Visitors reach the pools by Jangada, where they can swim among colorful fish and corals. The tour lasts about an hour and takes place at the best times of low tide. It is conducted by accredited Jangadeiros. Since operational details may change depending on conditions, it is advisable to check the current times and arrangements in advance.
Scuba diving and snorkeling offer further ways to observe marine biodiversity. The Biofábrica de Corais experience has a different duration: it lasts three hours and takes visitors by Jangada to a floating platform. At the Biofábrica, you can take part in reef restoration activities and plant a coral in the region’s sea. Check in advance whether the experience is available on your travel dates.
Routes, Mangroves and Village Life
The Outeiro ecological trail, also known as Oiteiro, begins in the center of Porto de Galinhas. The experience includes a historic flour house, or casa de farinha. There, visitors learn about the manual processing of cassava into flour and can try tapioca. The Igreja Nossa Senhora do Outeiro is considered the highest point in Porto de Galinhas and adds a cultural perspective on the town.
A different perspective on nature comes from crossing the mangrove area at Pontal de MaracaĂpe. A guide explains the area’s fauna and flora, as well as its ecological and historical significance. Since conditions may depend on the tide, check them before planning your visit.
In the village center, you’ll find shops selling local handicrafts. The Calçadão offers an opportunity for a leisurely stroll alongside local businesses. The Hippocampus Project is also based in Porto de Galinhas: it protects and researches an endangered marine seahorse species. Alongside activities on the water, handicrafts, knowledge of nature and local culture therefore offer different themes to choose from for your trip.
Getting There and Planning Your Time
Porto de Galinhas is about 60 kilometers south of Recife’s Guararapes International Airport. By car, the route follows the PE-009 and takes approximately one hour. The distance and travel time are approximate. Check the route and transport options before setting out.
For planning your time, allow about an hour for the Jangada tour and three hours for the Biofábrica experience. These are different time blocks for an excursion to the natural pools and an activity focused on reef restoration. The tide is another factor to consider when visiting the mangrove area. Taking these differences into account helps you choose whether to focus your trip on the water, nature or village life.
