When planning your trip, it’s worth considering different coastal and cultural themes. The places featured include Ponta de Pedras, as well as Barra de Catuama, Catuama and Carne de Vaca; the latter three are in the municipality of Goiana. Ponta de Pedras is known for cultural events and maritime history, while the municipal districts offer other highlights, including tidal pools, mangroves and a river estuary. You can choose which of these to focus on based on your interests.

Culture and Maritime History in Ponta de Pedras

Ponta de Pedras has a waterfront promenade for events, as well as bars, restaurants and standardized beach kiosks. Individual businesses and facilities may change, so check what is currently available before visiting. The Farol de Ponta de Pedras dates back to 1918, adding a historical point of interest to the town. The traditional Regata Benedito César is also part of its maritime heritage: the crossing runs from Ponta de Pedras Beach to the Port of Recife.

An annual cultural event is FESTBANFAS, the Festival of Bands and Fanfare Bands of Ponta de Pedras. It is part of the official cultural, artistic and tourism calendar of the municipality of Goiana, under a municipal regulation in force since July 15, 2026. If you’d like to plan your stay around the festival, check the dates for your travel period.

For diving enthusiasts, the wreck of the Vapor Bahia is another maritime point of interest. The ship sank 12 to 18 nautical miles from the coast in 1887. If you’re planning a dive to the wreck, check current operators and conditions in advance.

Nature Experiences in the Municipality of Goiana

Visitors can explore Croa da Baleia from Barra de Catuama and Catuama. At low tide, natural pools also form in Barra de Catuama, making them inviting for swimming. The two experiences also differ in timing: the pools depend on low tide, while Croa is a separate excursion destination from the places mentioned.

In Carne de Vaca, the Rio Goiana meets the sea, and the landscape is surrounded by mangrove areas. At Canoé, watching the sunset is one of the special experiences. Carne de Vaca therefore offers a different focus from the tidal pools of Barra de Catuama: here, the estuary and mangroves shape the landscape.

History is also part of Barra de Catuama. The Capela Nossa Senhora da Penha was founded in the 18th century and is designated as a tourist attraction. Nossa Senhora da Penha is the patron saint of the subdistrict. The chapel thus adds a historical and cultural dimension to an area that is also home to natural pools shaped by the tides.
