Porto Murtinho combines views of the Pantanal landscape with a layered architectural and cultural history. An interpretive walking trail leads to the summit of Morro Pão de Açúcar, which is about 550 meters high. There are also public squares along the Rio Paraguai and regional traditions. This raises a specific question for planning your trip: would you rather focus on landscapes and nature, or on architecture and culture?

Pantanal Views, Fishing, and Nature

Morro Pão de Açúcar serves as a viewpoint overlooking the Pantanal do Nabileque, the Pantanal do Chaco, Paraguay’s border areas, and the municipality of Porto Murtinho. The trail leads to the summit; the mountain’s elevation is given as about 550 meters. This makes it possible to pair the viewpoint with a specific hiking destination.

At Fecho dos Morros, the focus is on the Rio Paraguai, panoramic views, and observing nature. The site is one of the river’s highest points and attracts visitors for fishing and its views. There, you can observe wildlife and take in the flora and fauna of the Pantanal. The Porto Murtinho fishing region is considered an area with more than 230 fish species.

Buildings with Different Stories

Castelinho is a cultural and architectural landmark of Porto Murtinho. It was built in the European style between 1905 and 1914 using imported materials; construction was interrupted because of World War I. Padaria CuĂŞ reflects a different architectural influence: completed in 1928, the building features elements of industrial architecture that came to Brazil from Europe and North America. Since 2004, it has housed the Museu Dom Jaime AnĂbal Barrera.

The Matriz of the Paróquia Sagrado Coração de Jesus also brings together several building phases. It was inaugurated on January 1, 1939, and took on its present design, inspired by eclecticism, following a renovation in 1953. After its restoration, the Cine-Teatro Murtinhense Ney Machado Mesquita became an amphitheater for small and medium-sized events.

On Thomaz Laranjeira central square stands the Trenzinho, a symbolic representation of Porto Murtinho’s yerba mate cycle, also referred to as a former locomotive. On the banks of the Rio Paraguai is Praça do Tereré, a recreational spot with a large guampa symbol and a drinking fountain for people who want to try tereré.

Traditions and Events

Touro Candil is a cultural tradition influenced by the folklore of the border region, with a history of more than 100 years and a central place in Porto Murtinho. It includes religious belief in the Virgin of Caacupê, dances and traditional games, as well as a competition between bulls. A separate religious celebration takes place in December: thousands of worshippers take part in a procession through the city in honor of Nossa Senhora de Caacupé.

During fishing season, Porto Murtinho welcomes visitors from various parts of Brazil, especially from the South, Southeast, and Center-West. Cycling enthusiasts also have a specific historical point of reference: at the 15th edition of the traditional Rota Pantaneira de Ciclismo in 2025, the event was renamed Rota Bioceânica. It started at Orla do Rio Paraguai and included a 13-kilometer city tour as well as a 33-kilometer race. The two distances refer to different parts of that edition.

Whether landscapes, fishing, architectural history, or regional traditions are what draw you, Porto Murtinho offers several distinct reasons to stay. These interests can also guide your search for a vacation rental in Porto Murtinho.
