Valparaíso Adventure Park is located in the municipality of Paço do Lumiar on the island of São Luís. The park offers two different activities: a high ropes course with ten types of obstacles and the Ooba water playground. Travelers weighing up activities in the park, beach destinations and cultural history will find a range of thematic highlights in the municipality.

High ropes course and water playground

The high ropes course at Valparaíso Adventure Park is almost 200 meters long. Clear requirements apply: it is open to people at least 1.45 meters tall and weighing no more than 100 kilograms. Shorts or Bermuda shorts and closed-toe shoes are required. Check the current availability of the activity before your trip.

Ooba is also located at Valparaíso Adventure Park and is a water playground with a water depth of 30 centimeters. Its features include transparent slides, accessible platforms, large water buckets and water fountains. The platforms are a specific feature of Ooba; they do not automatically indicate that all areas of the park are accessible. It is also recommended that you check the current availability of this activity.

Beach destinations and waterfront experiences

At Praia Olho de Porco, beach huts stand right by the water, and the place has a rustic character. In 2026, the municipality highlighted Praia do Timbuba as a local attraction. Both names offer a starting point for travelers who want to explore Paço do Lumiar beyond its buildings and cultural traditions.

A press trip organized by the municipal administration began at Porto de Timbuba in 2025. The group traveled in handmade boats through the municipality's natural bays and along the riverbanks. A documented press trip in 2025 also included swimming at Ponta da Madalena and views of croas, or sandbanks. These are specific examples from a travel program, clearly dated to that year.

Matraca traditions and regional culture

Bumba Meu Boi da Pindoba performs in the Matraca style during the June festival season. Boi do Iguaíba is also associated with this style of performance. It comes from the place of the same name and represents a tradition more than 100 years old. As a folkloric association, it keeps the tradition alive through performances. Check for up-to-date information before your trip for specific event dates.

Museu do Bumba Meu Boi da Maioba was established to document important figures in the local Bumba Meu Boi tradition. Its focus is therefore on the people associated with this local culture. Boi do Iguaíba, meanwhile, has its own historical connection to the municipality through its age and place of origin.

Churches and historic architecture

Igreja e o Largo de Nossa Senhora da Luz in Paço do Lumiar were designated as protected heritage sites because of their historic value to the state of Maranhão. Another example of local architecture is Prédio da Cadeia Pública at Rua Principal 110 in Maioba do Mocajituba. It is considered an example of historic regional architecture; its walls are one meter thick.

Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Conceição in Iguaíba has a rectangular floor plan, a single-nave hall, a sacristy and a small, single-level bell tower. Capela de Nossa Senhora da Conceição in Vila Maioba do Janipapeiro has a simple interior. Its altar features depictions of the Holy Scriptures and São Benedito. The buildings described therefore differ both in form and in their interior details.

Visitor information and local offerings

Centro de Atendimento ao Turista (CAT) was inaugurated in Timbuba on September 2, 2026. It was established to welcome, inform and guide visitors. The facility has spaces for displaying and selling handicrafts and aims to help promote local culture, handicrafts and attractions. If you plan to use the CAT as a visitor information point, check whether it is currently operating before making a special trip.

Festival do Marisco also offers a glimpse into the connection between food and local events: the edition announced for September 5–7, 2025, at Porto do Timbuba was set to feature typical seafood dishes, pies, broths and fish.
