When planning a trip to Alto Parnaíba, it is worth distinguishing between the town and the municipality. The festival tradition and the BR-235 bridge provide specific connections to the town and its transport links; the national park, waterfalls, and communities are part of the wider picture of the municipality. This can help you decide whether to focus your trip on culture in town, nature, or onward travel to the communities.

Nature in the Municipality

The Parque Nacional das Nascentes do Rio Parnaíba is located in the municipality. The park is home to 97 fish species, 45 of which are endemic to the park’s three river basins. Its landscapes include waterfalls, veredas, buritizais, and rocky cliffs formed by mountain ranges. The natural setting thus ranges from water and vegetation to striking rock formations. The park offers opportunities for environmental education and interpretation, nature recreation, and ecotourism. If you plan to focus on this, check the current access conditions before visiting.

During a stop by the Maranhão state tourism expedition in the municipality in 2025, visits to Cachoeira do Laloo, Cachoeira do Merval, and other waterfalls were planned. The two names point to specific waterfall destinations within the municipality; the plan at the time describes a stop by the expedition, not a current travel itinerary.

Arriving and Understanding the Routes

The BR-235 bridge over the Rio Parnaíba connects Alto Parnaíba in Maranhão with Santa Filomena in Piauí. The bridge was completed in May 2021. It is a clear landmark for the connection between the two towns across the river.

The dirt road from Alto Parnaíba to the communities of Macacos, Brejim, and Curupá is a different proposition: it is 130 kilometers long. The route can only be traveled in an off-road vehicle—not just any 4×4—or by motorcycle, animal, or on foot. As conditions can change, get current information about the route before setting out. On an earlier drive, the Tô no Mapa team took five hours to cover the 130 kilometers after arriving in Alto Parnaíba. This historical one-off figure is not a current driving-time estimate and should not be used for planning travel today.

Festival Tradition and Cultural Connections

The festivals in honor of Nossa Senhora das Vitórias, the municipality’s patron saint, are part of Alto Parnaíba’s religious and popular tradition. The 2026 program was set to include masses, bingo events, raffles, horseback processions, dawn celebrations, and fireworks. Activities were centered near the Igreja Matriz and the town center. If a specific celebration is key to your trip, check the dates in advance.

The communities of Macacos, Brejim, and Curupá are also part of the municipality’s cultural landscape: the Fundação Cultural Palmares has certified them as Quilombola communities. Alongside the festival tradition, this status reflects another aspect of Alto Parnaíba’s cultural connections.
