Vargem Grande brings together two distinct focal points: Lagoa Paulo Ramos, an urban place for leisure and contemplation, and the religious tradition surrounding São Raimundo Nonato. The municipality also has cultural connections and festivals in the surrounding area. When planning your trip, it makes a difference whether you are looking for a place to relax or want to plan your stay around a religious occasion. The festivals have specific dates, while the lagoon stands alongside them as a separate urban landmark.

Lagoa Paulo Ramos: Leisure in the Urban Area

Lagoa Paulo Ramos is an urban place for leisure and contemplation in Vargem Grande. It offers a different focus from processions and festivals: here, a particular place takes centre stage, while those events each follow their own schedule. The lagoon is also affected by environmental pressures. Both aspects are part of what makes this local excursion destination distinctive and help set it apart from the pilgrimage and festival programmes tied to specific dates.

Pilgrimage and August Dates

The São Raimundo Nonato pilgrimage is considered one of the two best-known Catholic pilgrimages in the state of Maranhão. More than 1,000 riders accompany the procession. On São Raimundo’s Day, 30 August, it sets out for Paulica in the morning; at the end of the day, the image of the saint is brought back. The event therefore runs from the morning departure through to the return of the image at the end of the day.

The pilgrims’ stop in Paulica includes an open-air mass, the laying of votive offerings, a large encampment and folk culture performances. Paulica is near Vargem Grande. The Santuário São Raimundo dos Mulundus is located in Paulica, within the municipality of Vargem Grande.

The Festejo de São Raimundo Nonato dos Mulundus takes place in August. Its programme includes masses, processions, pilgrimages and cultural performances; individual activities may vary from one edition to another. São Raimundo’s Day on 30 August and the August Festejo therefore offer different dates to consider when planning a trip.

Culture in the Municipality and Surrounding Area

The Quilombo Rampa, founded in 1818, is located near Vargem Grande. The Festejo de São Bartolomeu takes place there. A 2025 report gives the festival dates as 15 to 24 August; dates may vary from one edition to another. This destination thus combines a historical connection with a festival programme whose specific dates apply to a particular edition.

Within the municipality of Vargem Grande, Boi Brilho de São João is a cultural reference for Bumba-Meu-Boi. Alongside the Catholic festivals, this offers another perspective on local culture. The Festival da Farinha in the surrounding area adds its own dimension: a 2015 account mentions cultural, sporting and agricultural activities, as well as the processing of farinha and organic products produced by the community. Agriculture and community production thus complement the destination’s religious and cultural themes.

When to Visit and Find Accommodation

August is the key month for the procession, the Festejo de São Raimundo takes place in August, and the specific festival dates in Rampa may change. If a particular programme is the main reason for your visit, check the dates for the relevant edition before planning your trip.
