Pico dos Pireneus reaches 1,385 meters and is the second-highest point in the state of Goiás. From its summit, there is a 360-degree view of the Serra dos Pireneus. In the municipality of Cocalzinho de Goiás, striking highland scenery, hiking and cycling trails, waterfalls, cultural sites and wine experiences come together. When planning your trip, it is worth choosing these different highlights deliberately and taking their respective visitor conditions into account.
Highlands and protected landscapes
Parque Estadual dos Pireneus lies on the borders of the municipalities of Pirenópolis, Cocalzinho de Goiás and Corumbá de Goiás. Covering 2,834 hectares, it preserves characteristic rocky Cerrado vegetation in high-altitude areas as well as distinctive rock formations. Pico dos Pireneus is one of the park’s main attractions. If you are interested in landscapes and protected areas, this is a clear point of reference: the summit, rock formations and Cerrado together define the character of this region.
Another protected area is Área de Proteção Ambiental dos Pireneus. It also encompasses the municipalities of Pirenópolis, Cocalzinho de Goiás and Corumbá de Goiás and covers a total of 22,880 hectares. The municipality’s tourist attractions also include Caverna dos Ecos. Check the current visitor arrangements for each of these places before adding them firmly to your day’s itinerary.
The headquarters of Parque Estadual dos Pireneus is 8 kilometers from Cocalzinho de Goiás; 5 kilometers of the route are on an unpaved road. Road conditions can change, so it is a good idea to check them before setting out. A hiking trail of about 600 meters leads to the summit of Pico dos Pireneus and continues to Capela da Santíssima Trindade dos Pireneus. The walk takes approximately 15 minutes; trail conditions can vary.
Hiking, waterfalls and nature experiences
Área de Proteção Ambiental dos Pireneus offers trails through the Cerrado for hiking and cycling. Experiences mentioned there also include discovering and tasting regional fruit straight from the plants: Cajuzinho do Cerrado, Mangaba, Mutamba, Cajá, Mama-cadela, Cagaita and Murici. This means you can plan a tour not only around the route, but also around the region’s plant life.
Dozens of waterfalls have been cataloged in the area. Some are on private property, while others are in places with free public access. Access rules therefore vary by destination; check the rules for each waterfall before setting out. Cachoeira do Girassol, in the district of Girassol, features natural pools and ecological hiking trails. Confirm access and available facilities before visiting.
If you are interested in longer routes, consider Caminho de Cora Coralina: this long-distance trail is about 300 kilometers long, is intended for hikers and cyclists, and also passes through the municipality of Cocalzinho de Goiás. This is the length of the entire route, not a specific section in the municipality. Tirolesa Voo dos Pireneus is located at Hotel Fazenda Tabapuã dos Pireneus. Before visiting, check whether it is currently possible to use it and under what conditions.
Chapel, festivals and wine
Capela da Santíssima Trindade dos Pireneus remains a place for celebrations and prayer. The traditional Festa da Santíssima Trindade is also held there. If you would like to include the festival in your trip, check the event dates separately. This keeps the cultural event as a distinct planning consideration alongside the route to the summit.
Wine is another part of the municipality’s experiences. Vinhedo Girassol offers guided walks among the vines and wine tastings; check booking details and current availability in advance. A report updated on April 15, 2025, mentions a walk through the vineyards for visitors during Semana Santa. The vineyard is about 30 kilometers from Cocalzinho de Goiás. Keep this timing in mind when planning, rather than assuming the experience is available year-round.
Fazenda Pireneus Vinhos e Vinhedos offers vineyard tours and coordinated tastings of wines produced there. Check in advance whether a visit is possible and what reservations are required. A 2015 report lists Bandeiras and Intrépido as wines produced there and describes them as having been recognized and appreciated nationwide since 2010.
Choose the right focus for your stay
You can plan your days around the respective starting points and visitor conditions, rather than cramming different destinations into a tight itinerary without checking the connections between them. For waterfalls on private property, wineries and the zipline, check possible access requirements or dates in advance.
