Cavalcante is located on the Ribeirão Lava-pés, a tributary of the Rio das Almas, which flows into the Paranã. The town is in the northern part of Chapada dos Veadeiros. Cavalcante is about 500 km from Goiânia, about 300 km from Brasília, and about 90 km from Alto Paraíso. Alto Paraíso is therefore considerably closer than the other two reference points mentioned.

History and Culture

Cavalcante began as a mining settlement and lost all significance after mining ended. On November 2, 1851, the settlement was elevated to the status of a vila. The Santana Church was built during this period; the Rosário and Boa Morte churches also date from the period when it was elevated. The beginnings of mining and the construction of the churches can thus be viewed as two distinct historical reference points.

In 2022, Casa do Artesão de Cavalcante and Flor de Café began a partnership, opening a shared space at the entrance to Cavalcante. The Kalunga Territory is located within the municipality of Cavalcante, is easily accessible, and is open to tourist visits. Check local visitor rules in advance for individual sites. The Sítio Histórico e Patrimônio Cultural Kalunga is also located within the municipality; it is the largest Quilombo community in the country.

Waterfalls and the Cerrado Landscape

According to the description, the Engenho II community is 27 km from Cavalcante town center; the Candaru, Capivara, and Santa Bárbara waterfalls are located there, along with extensive stretches of untouched Cerrado vegetation. According to the description, the waterfalls carry plenty of water year-round, even during pronounced dry seasons. Cachoeira Santa Bárbara has a 28 m cascade and a large, crystal-clear, turquoise-blue pool; it is surrounded by untouched Cerrado vegetation.

The municipality is home to the Complexo do Prata, which consists of seven waterfalls. The round-trip route is 14 km long, and visitors must be accompanied by a guide. Check local conditions before visiting. Cachoeira Rei do Prata is known for its emerald-green water. In a gorge, its approximately 7 m drop forms a clear, emerald-green pool where swimming is possible.

The waterfall heights offer a direct comparison of scale: the Cachoeira Santa Bárbara cascade is 28 m high, while the Cachoeira Rei do Prata drop is about 7 m.

The municipality is also home to the Complexo Águas Lindas e Canjica. It includes natural pools, natural infinity pools in shades of blue or emerald green, and waterfalls. Cachoeira Canjica is associated with an ancient rock formation. Check access conditions locally if you are planning a visit.
