Barroquinha lies on the coast of the state of Ceará. The municipality has an approximately 25 km-long coastline with numerous beaches and distinctive landscapes. Bright sandy shores, sweeping dunes and artisanal fishing shape the coast. These features are especially easy to explore at the beaches and places around Bitupitá.

Beaches and Dunes Around Bitupitá

Praia de Bitupitá has bright sandy shores and sweeping dunes; the village of Bitupitá lies on the coast of the municipality of Barroquinha. The beach is 30 km from the municipal center and is also known as “Paraíso Dourado do Ceará” (Golden Paradise of Ceará). You can watch the sunset here. Members of the local community and tourists gather at Farol de Bitupitá to look out over the region’s beaches, dunes and forests from above.

Bitupitá is considered a peaceful beach with cuisine typical of fishing regions and smaller, relatively simple guesthouses. The place is considered suitable for relaxation without heavy beach crowds.

Fishing as Part of the Coastal Landscape

Artisanal fishing is the main economic activity of the residents of the beaches of Bitupitá and Curimã. Fishing corrals are well known in the Bitupitá area: they extend more than five miles out to sea from the coastal beach area. These structures built in the sea serve as traps for catching schools of fish. Fishing is therefore not only a local economic activity, but also a characteristic part of the coastal landscape.

Praia das Curimãs is also home to numerous fishing corrals and has great potential for fishing. The beach is 34 km from the municipal center. An especially impressive sunset can also be seen from here.

Other Coastal Places and Their Distinctive Features

Barra dos Remédios is considered an important tourist destination and the place where Barroquinha began. It is 14 km from the municipal center. Praia Nova is 15 km from the center; its traditions include a canoe regatta on Holy Saturday. Lagoa da Praia Nova lies right next to the beach. Barroquinha therefore offers a variety of coastal landscapes side by side: dunes and fishing at Bitupitá, the canoe regatta and lagoon at Praia Nova, and Barra dos Remédios’ special historical connection.

Getting There and Finding Accommodation

Praia de Bitupitá is accessible via CE-187. In connection with the APA Delta do Parnaíba, BR-402 is one of the main access roads to the municipalities of Barroquinha and Chaval in Ceará. The two road references describe different points of orientation: CE-187 relates to Bitupitá, while BR-402 provides access to the protected area region for the municipalities mentioned.

When choosing accommodation, you can first consider which kind of coast suits your trip. Bitupitá combines a peaceful beach atmosphere with traditional fishing corrals and smaller, relatively simple guesthouses. At Praia das Curimãs, fishing and the sunset take center stage; Praia Nova adds the nearby lagoon and traditional canoe regatta to the coastal destinations. These differences can help you choose where to go in Barroquinha based on your interests in beaches, fishing or local traditions, without turning the places into a fixed sightseeing itinerary.
