Crafts, Carnival and religious festivals offer different ways to experience Nova Russas. The city’s history adds another perspective, with its railway station and historic railway.

Crochet as a cultural focus

In 2009, Nova Russas in the state of Ceará was recognized as the “Capital of Crochet.” Crochet holds a special place among the handicrafts made in Nova Russas. In the 1980s, a group of crocheters founded ASCRON to increase recognition and appreciation for their products. This recognition gives the craft cultural standing; the story of the organization’s founding also reflects a desire for the products to be more highly valued. The Feira do Crochê takes place on Saturdays at Praça da Estação. The Saturday event offers a specific point of reference if you want to plan your trip around local crafts.

Carnival and festivals

Nova Russas’s Carnival was the first Carnival event in Ceará to feature a trio elétrico. Unlike the Feira do Crochê at Praça da Estação, the Carnival parade proceeds through streets decorated to match that year’s event theme. The festival also attracts tourists from other municipalities.

The Festa Junina takes place in the city park. Its program includes Quadrilha performances from the municipality and other regions, while the festival also preserves elements of northeastern Brazilian culture. The Festa da Padroeira Nossa Senhora das Graças takes place in August and is shaped by faith and religious devotion. It is also considered a boost for tourism.

The 2026 edition of Festeja Nova Russas was announced for August 14–16 at the Arena de Eventos; the announced dates had already passed by October 10, 2026. The program was set to include regional cuisine, musical performances, cultural groups, dance, visual arts, crafts, exhibitions and creative-economy offerings. Over the years, Festeja has grown, attracting visitors from across Ceará and neighboring states.

Railway station and city history

Nova Russas railway station is located in the city center and was built as a landmark. Historically, it facilitated the transport of goods for trade and the transportation of passengers. The railway section in Nova Russas was built in 1910 and opened on November 9 of that year.

The Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora das Graças is also a point of reference for the city’s cultural heritage. In a legislative proceeding in 2021, a favorable opinion was issued on classifying the church as a monument of outstanding cultural, tourist and religious importance.

Dates for your stay

Two dates are particularly useful when planning your visit: the Feira do Crochê takes place on Saturdays, and the Festa da Padroeira is held in August. Before traveling, check whether the Feira is currently taking place and find out the specific dates of the festivals.
