The hand-crafted Varanda trim along the sides of a hammock is a hallmark of pieces from Jaguaruana. This gives the local craft a detail that makes its origin visible. Jaguaruana is considered one of the pioneering municipalities in the state of Ceará for the specialized production of hammocks.
Hammock Craftsmanship with a Distinctive Style
Artisans in Jaguaruana have developed unique techniques and patterns that are passed down from generation to generation. Production is typically organized around the family: the head of the household oversees management and production, while women and children help finish the pieces. Varanda refers to the hand-crafted side detail, not to one of the product types.
The APL de Redes de Jaguaruana produces ten types of hammocks: açucena, brim, bucho de boi, casa de abelha, dama, jeans, maria bonita, olho de peixe, sarja, and tijubana. The hammock also appears in official municipal symbols: the municipal anthem and the coat of arms on the flag, which was created in 1890. This means the theme extends from a craft detail to municipal identity.
Parish History in Chronological Order
The parish associated with Igreja Matriz Senhora San'ana was established by Law No. 1,083 on December 4, 1863, and canonically inaugurated on December 19 of the same year. Its first vicar was Alexandre Corrêa de Araújo Melo; he was installed on January 31, 1864. The establishment, inauguration, and taking of office were therefore three separate milestones within a few months. The chapel of Igreja Matriz is said to have been built at D. Feliciana’s expense about four years before the land registry entry.
Festivals and Cultural Events
Quadrilhas Juninas are part of Jaguaruana’s fundamental cultural identity. In 2001, the Quadrilha Beija Flor incorporated the town’s hammock culture into its performance: its theme was “Quadrilha Beija Flor na terra da rede”. This is a concrete historical example of a festival tradition and a defining craft coming together.
Jaguaruana’s Mela-mela takes place on the municipality’s main street and central square. The celebrations include Axé bands, as well as foam, wheat flour, or cornstarch used by the revelers. Carnival is the cultural event that brings the most people to the municipality.
