Floresta Azul offers several distinct points of interest for planning a trip: the central Jardim Encantado, the history of Igreja Matriz Senhora Santana, festivals with dated programmes, and cocoa production in the municipality. This makes it possible to tailor a stay to different interests, such as local history, religious and architectural heritage, folk culture or agricultural production. These features are not all in the town centre: Fazenda Vila Formosa is outside it, while Praça Manoel Saturnino is centrally located.
The town’s name and central square
The name Floresta Azul is associated with two possible origins. One explanation points to the sight of a dense forest; another to flowering water hyacinths covering the Rio Salgado. The origin story thus preserves two distinct images of nature without settling on a single explanation.
In the town centre is Praça Manoel Saturnino, also known as Jardim Encantado. Jardim Encantado is Floresta Azul’s main square and has a fountain; it is also considered one of the town’s landmarks. Both names are useful for finding your way around: they refer to the same central square.
Church and cultural heritage
Igreja Matriz Senhora Santana connects the town’s religious and architectural history with its present day. It is part of Floresta Azul’s municipal historical and architectural heritage and is considered a cultural and religious landmark. Its new façade was inaugurated on 1 December 2024. The church’s lasting place in the municipal heritage and this specifically dated event concerning its façade represent different aspects of the town’s history. For travellers interested in architectural and religious history, the church is a distinctive cultural point of reference.
Landscape and cocoa in the municipality
The entire stretch of the Rio Salgado within the municipality of Floresta Azul is designated as a nature reserve. This offers a landscape perspective at municipal level, distinct from the historical and architectural heritage of Igreja Matriz. When considering the different facets of the town, you can distinguish between the municipal nature reserve and local architectural and cultural heritage.
Another regional focus is cocoa cultivation at Fazenda Vila Formosa in Floresta Azul, Bahia. The farm processes cocoa from harvesting and fermentation through to chocolate production. The cocoa trees grow in the shade, using the Cabruca system in the Atlantic Rainforest. As an agricultural feature, cocoa production adds another perspective on the municipality alongside its church history and urban festival culture.
Festivals with clearly dated events
Natal Folia was held for the seventh consecutive time in 2024. The 2025 SĂŁo JoĂŁo Cultural programme included forrĂł, games and cultural performances. The festival was part of the city-organised June programme, which took place in different locations throughout Floresta Azul and brought tradition, entertainment and folk culture to the city. The two years provide the historical context for the respective festivals. If you want to plan your trip around a festival, check the dates for the edition you want to attend before arranging your accommodation.
