Brumado brings together historic churches and archival history with distinctive cultural sites and festival traditions. Those interested in the history of the town will find several points of interest, from the Igreja Matriz to the municipal archive and the squares where culture and social life come together.
Church History and Preserved Traces
The first chapel, built in the Roman colonial style, was erected in 1815 at the site of today’s Igreja Matriz of the Paróquia Bom Jesus. The area was then called Bom Jesus dos Meiras and is now Brumado. The Igreja da Paróquia do Bom Jesus, also known as Igreja Matriz de Brumado, dates from the 19th century and is considered part of the city’s historical, religious and cultural heritage.
During the second renovation, completed in 2001, only the original façade, with doors and windows dating from the time of its construction, was preserved. This is an important distinction when considering the building: its history dates back to the 19th century, while these façade elements are the main features retained from its original design.
Archive, Market and Praça Solon Milton Castro
The Arquivo Histórico Municipal – Memória de Brumado brings together a historic building and the city’s institutional history. The building has typological features dating from the second half of the 19th century. Following restoration, it opened as a municipal public archive in 2009. It preserves records of the municipal executive and legislative branches, documents from the national and state judiciary, bibliographic material and an extensive collection of iconographic material. The collection thus spans administrative and legal history as well as visual material. In 2011, the archive held its first exhibition open to the public.
A more recent addition to the city is Praça Solon Milton Castro, inaugurated in August 2026. It is located on Rua Augusto Alves, behind Mercado de Artes, in Brumado’s old commercial center, and is designed as a place for leisure and socializing for residents, merchants and visitors. Mercado de Artes is one of the city’s most important cultural spaces. The two places serve different purposes: the square is intended for leisure and socializing, while the market plays an important cultural role.
Festivals and Cultural Traditions
São João and São Pedro are among Brumado’s traditional festivals. São João is connected to the city’s cultural roots, shaped by Sertanejo traditions. One specific, dated edition of São Pedro took place from June 26 to 28, 2025, at Praça Coronel Zeca Leite. Admission was free, and music acts known regionally and nationally were announced. In 2026, Carnaval de Brumado also returned as a full event after a long absence from the cultural calendar. If you are planning a trip to a festival, check the specific dates for your chosen period.
Terno de Reis is also established at the municipal level: it is recognized as intangible cultural heritage of the municipality of Brumado. The last Saturday in January is designated as Terno de Reis Day there. Planned activities include talks, exhibitions, tours and artistic performances. If you are planning to attend a future edition, check the dates and program with the municipality.
Landscape in the Municipality of Brumado
Serra das Éguas is a tourist attraction in the municipality of Brumado. Its mountainous landscape is part of its distinctive character; the Serra also has caves and springs. These natural features add a landscape perspective to the area’s historical and cultural attractions, without requiring a specific excursion itinerary.
