At the administrative center of Nilo Peçanha, Nova Orla is located on the left bank of the Rio das Almas. The redeveloped area was opened in June 2024 and is intended for tourism, leisure, sports and culture. Its riverside location provides a clear point of reference for finding your way around town.

Culture in the municipality

Jatimane, a Quilombola settlement, is located in the municipality. Its history, ancestry and traditional knowledge shape its community-based tourism approach. A tourism description published in 2023 links a visit to the sensory garden with an ecological trail, a swimming spot at a waterfall, and canoe trips through mangroves that showcase local fishing traditions.

The “Tradição do Quilombo” route offers a different focus: it includes an introduction to harvesting piaçava and processing it into bio-jewelry and baskets, as well as a visit to the women artisans’ workshop. In Jatimane, nature and fishing traditions are thus highlighted alongside handicrafts. If you are planning a specific tour, check the arrangements for visits in advance.

Boitaraca is another Quilombola community in the municipality. It is associated with piaçava, fishing and seafood gathering, and its landscape faces the Rio dos Patos. In the broader context of the Costa do Dendê, Zambiapunga is cited as a cultural tradition of Nilo Peçanha. A decree published on November 30, 2018, recognized Zambiapunga as Bahia’s intangible cultural heritage.

Coastal landscape and nature

The municipality includes areas of Atlantic Forest and mangroves, as well as the Rio dos Patos, the Rio das Almas and Cachoeira do Oco. Nature activities mentioned in the area include hiking, boat and canoe trips, river swimming and nature observation. Cachoeira do Oco is one of the municipality’s natural attractions.

Barra dos Carvalhos is a coastal fishing community in the municipality. Its landscape includes a long beach, coconut palms, the sea, a river and mangroves, as well as community life. The place also serves as a starting point and connection for nautical excursions and trips to nearby areas, including parts of the surroundings of Boipeba and other landscapes along the coast of Baixo Sul. A report from February 2026 mentions repairs to the landing pier, which created better conditions for boats to dock and greater comfort for users.

Road connections are also important for getting around the municipality: key routes include BA-001 and BA-250. The local road network connects the administrative center with villages, rural communities and coastal areas.

Traditions and trip planning

In the town of Nilo Peçanha, a festive mass honoring Senhor do Bonfim, the city’s patron saint, was celebrated in January 2025. It continues the established patron-saint tradition. In the municipality, the 2026 edition of the traditional São Pedro da Rua Nova, according to reports, brought residents and visitors together for two days of music and culture. The festival is described as a tradition passed down through generations that strengthens family and community ties.
