In Alagoinhas, cultural themes range from railway history at Estação de São Francisco to June festival traditions and a community in a rural setting. When choosing accommodation, it helps to distinguish between local cultural history and events tied to specific dates. The station, squares and places of remembrance offer different points of interest from festivals held as specific editions.

Railway history at Estação de São Francisco

Estação de São Francisco is located on Rua 2 de Julho and is a building in the English style. It houses the Museu Ferroviário da Bahia. The museum’s historic railway vehicles are intended for visits, research and educational activities. The station’s architecture and the museum’s railway objects come together in one place.

The Trem do Forró is also part of Alagoinhas’ railway history. Its history as part of the June festivals dates back to 2017; in Bahia, it is considered a tradition. Its historic departure point was Estação Ferroviária São Francisco. The format described included a one-hour ride in a specially themed railway carriage, accompanied by accordion trios. The 2024 edition did not take place.

Squares, buildings and local memory

The Totem de Alagoinhas stands in Praça Kennedy. Its reliefs refer to historical events. The Coreto is in the city center, in Praça J.J. Seabra, and is considered one of the city’s recurring postcard images. The two places offer different points of interest: the Totem for its reliefs, and the Coreto for its role as a city landmark.

The Igreja de Santo Antônio (Igreja Inacabada) in Alagoinhas Velha offers another glimpse into the city’s architectural history: construction began in the mid-19th century, and it is regarded as the city’s greatest historical heritage. Two memorials also reflect different aspects of local history and culture. The Memorial da Câmara Municipal preserves part of Alagoinhas’ history. The Memorial do Coreto is a place for social exchange and cultural life.

June festival traditions and events

The Trezena de Santo Antônio is associated with Alagoinhas’ June festivals and has been recognized as intangible cultural heritage of the municipality since May 27, 2025. Bahia Beer – Festival de Cerveja de Alagoinhas reached its third edition in 2025. At Passarela da Cerveja, visitors could taste and learn about various types of craft beer. The program also included the traditional Corrida da Cerveja, a 5 km recreational run. The 2025 edition therefore included both tastings and a sporting activity. If a festival is the reason for your trip, check the event dates before booking your accommodation.

A community in a rural setting

Quilombo Cangula is a 200-year-old community in the rural surroundings of Alagoinhas. It has inherited cultural and gastronomic traditions. This makes it a community, rather than a building, monument or event format, that takes center stage. Its rural setting distinguishes this cultural focus from the city’s railway station, square and architectural history themes.
