In Ljubuški, historical landmarks meet opportunities for outdoor activity and nature: the Old Town is a national monument, a medieval fortress stands above the town, and a running and walking trail follows the Trebižat Dam. You can narrow down which aspects of the town you’d like to explore as you plan your trip.

Cultural heritage from the Old Town to Humac

Ljubuški Old Town was declared a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina in October 2003. Herceg Stjepan Fortress stands above the town, atop Buturovica. It was built in the Middle Ages. The Old Town’s heritage status and the hilltop fortress thus represent two distinct historical landmarks in the town.

The Humac Museum is housed in the Franciscan monastery of St. Anthony of Padua. It was founded in 1884 and is considered the oldest museum in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Its collection includes archaeological material from the wider Herzegovina region dating from prehistoric, ancient, and medieval times; its time span reaches back nearly 16,000 years. The complex also includes a lapidarium with stone monuments in the monastery courtyard.

Archaeological evidence in the surrounding area also spans different periods. In Humac are the partially excavated and preserved remains of the Roman military complex of Gračine, dating from the 1st to the 3rd century. The wider area around Ljubuški is also home to seven necropolises with a total of 214 registered medieval stećak tombstones. Together with the museum’s collections, these offer a range of points of interest for anyone interested in history and archaeology.

Waterfall, trails, and outdoor activities

Koćuša Waterfall is located in the village of Veljaci in the municipality of Ljubuški. It is five metres high and 50 metres long; historic mills and fulling mills are nearby. A relatively flat running and walking trail with few obstacles runs along the Trebižat Dam in Ljubuško polje and is suitable for beginner runners. Cycling routes are also available in Ljubuški, offering a way to explore the destination.

Another way to get active is to climb Vrlosinj: at 954 metres, it is the highest peak in the municipality of Ljubuški and is offered as a recreational hiking tour. These options vary in activity, from running and walking along the dam to cycling routes and a hike to the municipality’s highest peak.

Outdoor activities also include paragliding, available to both cross-country pilots and recreational pilots. Check local operator arrangements before taking part. Hercegovina GO! offers an off-road safari through Ljubuški in Pinzgauer off-road vehicles; operating arrangements may change. On the canoe safari, the ride begins on calm water and becomes faster and more exciting near the river mouth. Water conditions vary by season.

Events and wine

The Ljubuški Carnival takes place every year toward the end of winter. An annual children’s music festival brings children together for an entertaining competition program. Ljubuški Jazz Fest features seven-day jazz workshops, offering young people interested in jazz the opportunity to learn about the genre.

In May, the Ljubuški Outdoor Festival takes place next to Kravica Waterfall; its program includes competitions, entertainment, and music. During the holidays, an event in the town centre offers a range of cultural, entertainment, and gastronomic activities. Dates and programs for individual events may change; check them before your trip.

There are also two different ways to enjoy wine tastings: Smokva Wine Bar offers local wines for tasting. The “Kušaj ljubuška vina” event features wines from nine wineries in Ljubuški. Dates, participating wineries, and tasting arrangements may change; check the latest information in advance.
