Rivers and karst landscapes, historic buildings and cultural events give Grude several distinct facets. The Tihaljina rises near Peć Mlini, is called the Trebižat farther downstream, and flows into the Neretva. Churches, caves and an annual cultural event offer further points of interest. Grude can therefore be explored according to your interests in landscapes, architectural history or culture.
Water and karst in the municipality
The wider area of the municipality of Grude is characterised by numerous caves and karst depressions, as well as springs and other water resources. Named examples include Lake Krenica and the Tihaljina–Trebižat river system. Lake Krenica has a permanent connection to the groundwater and never dries up. It is about 300 metres wide and 47 metres deep. The regional tourism development plan lists it as a geological natural monument; the Tihaljina springs near Peć Mlini are designated there as a geomorphological natural monument.
Traces from different eras
Ravlića Cave lies at an elevation of 260 metres above the source of the Tihaljina. Traces of a settlement dating to the late Neolithic period were found in the cave at Drinovci. Archaeological evidence is therefore among Grude’s points of interest, alongside its striking church architecture.
The Church of Sveta Katarina in Grude stands on a rise above the town and is visible from almost every direction. It is a monumental, neo-Gothic, three-aisled basilica built of dressed Herzegovinian limestone, with three bell towers. Construction began on 25 September 1925. The settlement traces from the late Neolithic period and the start of this building project are two widely separated chronological reference points in the history of the municipality.
Gorica: heritage site and collection
In Gorica, the cultural and heritage site includes an old church, archaeological excavations, an early Christian baptistery with a baptismal font, the Croatian Franciscan archaeological collection Sv. Stjepan, and a gallery in the old rectory. It also includes the archaeological and historical collection Sv. Stjepan od Imote, with a permanent exhibition. The exhibition presents finds from the sites of Šamatorje, Grabarje and Grotuša. Gorica thus brings together architectural heritage, archaeological sites and an exhibition; the named sites give the collection a specific regional connection.
Cultural event and cycling route
The Šimićevi susreti is a traditional cultural event in the municipality of Grude, held every year in May. It was first organised in Drinovci in 1964. May is a useful time of year to keep in mind when planning your visit; check the specific dates for the relevant year.
The L303 cycling route runs from Grude through Blaževići, Drinovci, Peć Mlini, Tihaljina and Cerov dolac, then returns to Grude. The sequence of places makes the route easy to follow and provides a cycling option alongside the individual cultural and landscape attractions.
A media report dated 5 August 2023 places Peć Mlini Adventure Park beside the source of the Tihaljina and mentions rock climbing and a zip line. If you would like to include these activities in your travel plans, check the latest operating information in advance.
