Klokot is a water-rich destination whose name refers to both the spring and the river. The Klokot spring is one of the largest karst springs in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The river of the same name flows through the settlement of Klokot and is a left-bank tributary of the Una. When planning your trip, it is worth considering both aspects: the spring represents the area's geological distinction, while the river represents the waterside landscape that runs through the settlement. If you are looking for accommodation in Klokot, you can first decide whether the karst spring or the course of the river will be the focus of your stay.

The Spring and Its Geological Setting

The Klokot spring is one of the natural monuments of Una-Sana Canton. In the canton’s official gazette, published on December 31, 2021, it is listed as a natural monument. The spring area is surrounded by dense evergreen vegetation. Above the spring, there is a cave in a rock face; four speleological sites were identified in the surrounding area in 1986. These features add the geological setting to the classification of the site as a karst spring. Together, they show that the spring area is shaped not only by water, but also by vegetation and rock.

The Klokot as a Mountain River

The Klokot is a typical mountain river with an average water temperature of 8 to 10 °C. This is an average, not the temperature on a particular day. Along almost its entire course, the river flows past meadows and pastures. The spring area has a different landscape character: there, the spring is surrounded by dense evergreen vegetation. The open landscape along the river and the vegetated surroundings of the spring can therefore be seen as two distinct perspectives on Klokot.

The Riverside Excursion Area

On the left bank of the Klokot, immediately downstream from the pumping station, there is an excursion area used by Bihać residents. An access road leads to the Klokot excursion area, alongside the pumping station site. Its location can therefore be identified by its riverbank, its position along the river and its proximity to the pumping station. Road conditions and access restrictions may change, so check the route before setting out.

Another Feature of the Settlement

An authentic old Bosnian house in the settlement of Klokot adds a historical dimension to its natural character. A report from February 2026 states that the house is more than 230 years old. Alongside the spring and river, an old building and its long history are therefore also part of the place's appeal.

Choosing Klokot as a Destination

When looking for a holiday apartment, you can first decide what you want to focus on during your stay: are you most interested in the karst spring and its geological setting, the mountain river with its meadows and pastures, or the riverside excursion area? The historical significance of the old house may also influence your decision to visit Klokot. These different perspectives give you a concrete basis for choosing a destination according to the things that matter to you. You do not need to follow a set itinerary: the spring, river landscape and excursion area each describe a distinct aspect of Klokot.
