Lukavac offers several distinct points of interest for a trip: protected architecture, a historic railway station and Lake Modrac within the municipality. When looking for accommodation, you can first decide whether the town’s architectural history or its connection to Modrac should shape your stay. Vila Solvay, Crkva Sv. Ante Padovanskog and Stara Željeznička stanica represent different historical themes.

Protected architectural heritage

Vila Solvay was built in 1911/1912. It was originally intended as a healthcare facility, not as a residential building. Since November 2015, it has had the status of a National Monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Its intended use is a distinctive point of interest if you are interested in Lukavac’s architectural history: the name “Vila” alone does not tell you what purpose the building was originally meant to serve.

Another protected architectural ensemble comprises the Catholic church Crkva Sv. Ante Padovanskog and the parish house. Karl ParĹľik and Florijan Strauss designed both buildings; the church was built from 1928 to 1930. At the session held from 4 to 6 November 2015, the group of buildings comprising the church and parish house was declared a National Monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina. When comparing it with Vila Solvay, the scope of the protected status also differs: it applies to the villa in one case, and to the church and parish house as a group in the other. The construction dates also mark different periods: the villa dates from 1911/1912, and the church from 1928 to 1930.

Railway station and transport history

Stara Željeznička stanica adds the railway to the town’s architectural history. The building dates from 1894 and is the oldest surviving infrastructure building in Lukavac from the Austro-Hungarian period. It was built on the narrow-gauge Doboj–Simin Han railway line, which was completed by 29 April 1886. The dates therefore refer to two different things: 1886 to the construction of the line, and 1894 to the station building. This distinction helps place the development of railway infrastructure in its historical context.

For finding your way around town: the station is at Prva ulica 3, south of the centre of Lukavac. Lukavac itself lies on the Tuzla–Doboj railway line.

Lake Modrac and other themes

Lake Modrac is in the municipality of Lukavac, in the settlement of Modrac. It was formed in 1964 when a dam was built on the Spreča River. This adds a distinct point of interest connected with the lake’s formation and the river to the town’s architectural and transport history. For planning purposes, you can distinguish this theme from the town’s buildings.

The “LIST” fair also brings together several themes: tourism, ecology, gastronomy and entrepreneurship. It complements the architectural and transport history with a perspective that brings different interests together. If you would like to consider gastronomy or ecological topics as well as architecture, the fair provides a relevant point of interest.

Choose accommodation based on your travel priorities

The railway station is south of the centre of Lukavac; the lake is in the settlement of Modrac, within the municipality. If you are mainly interested in Vila Solvay, the church and railway history, focus your search on Lukavac. If you also want to include Lake Modrac in your plans, consider Modrac as a separate location. Compare specific hotel addresses with the places you actually want to visit.
