Neum lies on Bosnia and Herzegovina’s only stretch of coastline. At the same time, travel interests extend beyond the coast: archaeological finds, churches and cultural-historical sites shape Neum and its wider surroundings. When planning your stay, you can therefore treat beach time and cultural history as separate areas of interest.

Coast and Beaches

Neum’s coastline stretches for more than 20 kilometers and includes a variety of beaches. Four central town beaches lie directly along the waterfront promenade. The beaches are pebbly, and the seabed slopes gently into the water. Neum Bay is considered calm and crystal-clear. This gives you several points of reference when exploring the waterfront: the longer coastline, the location of the central beaches, and the characteristics of the shore and bay. If a central location on the promenade is important to you, the four town beaches offer a specific point of reference within the larger coastal area.

Swimming and Diving

Tiha Luka Bay is suitable for swimming. In addition, recreational diving is offered in Neum, supported by members of the local diving club. This means you can consider different water activities: swimming in a specifically named bay and diving as a recreational activity in Neum. When planning your trip around your interests, you can weigh these two options separately rather than treating the beach and water sports as one and the same experience.

Cultural History and Events

The archaeological exhibition at the Neum Museum includes the helmet of an Illyrian warrior. It came from a tomb discovered during construction work on the modern Neum–Stolac road. For those interested in culture, both the archaeological object and the specific story of its discovery are part of the subject.

The Church of St. Anthony in Old Neum is regularly used for Masses and religious ceremonies, especially in summer. The Catholic Church of St. Anne in Gradac was built before 1619 and is considered one of the oldest surviving religious buildings in this part of Herzegovina. The churches offer different points of reference in time: regular religious use, especially in summer, and a religious building dating from before 1619.

In the wider surroundings of Neum, the old town of Hutovo is considered an important cultural-historical landmark. Neum’s hinterland is also home to numerous medieval stećak necropolises, some of which are on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The cultural themes therefore range from museum objects and churches to historic townscapes and tombstones.

The Neum Summer Festival takes place annually in Neum and includes cultural and entertainment events. The individual annual programs may change. If you are traveling for a specific event, check the program for the relevant year.

For your planning, it is also helpful to note where the different sites and activities are located: the coast and museum shape Neum’s character, while Hutovo lies in the wider surroundings and the necropolises are located in the hinterland. This can help you decide whether you would like to focus mainly on the beach and water activities or include cultural history as well.
