Čitluk brings together local culture and religious tradition with the wine-growing context of the wider Brotnjo region. The town is located on the road between Mostar and Ljubuški. If you are considering Čitluk as a place to stay, make your choice based on whether cultural events, religious history, or wine events and tasting opportunities are the main focus of your stay. When planning, distinguish between offerings within the municipality and topics relating to the wider region.

Culture and Religious Tradition

The Kulturno-informativni centar Čitluk (KIC) organizes cultural events in the municipality of Čitluk, such as “Dani berbe grožđa,” performances, exhibitions and workshops. The program varies from one event to another; plan your travel dates around the specific occasion. The Narodna knjižnica at the KIC offers readers more than 9,000 titles; the size of the collection may change. The KIC was established from the Narodni univerzitet Čitluk, founded in 1962.

The Župa Krista Kralja in Čitluk celebrated its 100th anniversary. The traditional Marian procession includes a statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary; the route leads from the votive statue at the entrance to the town to the parish church of Krista Kralja. If you want a procession to determine your travel dates, check the specific dates before your trip.

Events and Viticulture

“Dani berbe grožđa” has traditionally been held since 1955. It takes place in September, in the first week after the church feast of the Exaltation of the Cross, and lasts up to three days. The organizers may adjust the timing and duration; the program also varies from one edition to another. At the event, cultural associations present visitors with some of the local cultural heritage. If you want to plan your trip around this festival, check the dates for the relevant edition.

Brotnjo is a wine-growing region in the wider area around Čitluk, with a long history of vine cultivation and wine production. Blatina and Žilavka are among its most popular grape varieties. Outside the immediate town center, the Župa Gradnići is considered the oldest parish in Brotnjo; it is home to the oldest wine cellar in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

A specific wine-tasting option is the tasting room at Vinarija Čitluk: it is located at the production facilities in the center of Čitluk and can accommodate up to 100 people. Confirm current visitor arrangements before visiting. One edition of the traditional “Kušanje mladog vina” event took place in November 2022 at Hotel Brotnjo. It was organized by the Čitluk branch of Matica hrvatska; visitors were offered young wine from Brotnjo to taste.

Cycling Tour and Walk

A cycling tour through the vineyards and wine cellars of Brotnjo described in 2023 began at the Vinarija Čitluk premises. The route was considered not very challenging, so younger participants could also take part; route details may change. Check the current route before including this tour in your plans.

A regulation published in April 2024 provided for walks and other activities at Gradski stadion Bare outside a specified period. Check the currently applicable conditions of use before visiting.
