About 75 percent of Bosnian-Podrinje Canton is covered by forest and pastureland at elevations above 500 metres. The canton also offers destinations for culture enthusiasts and a variety of ways to spend time on the Drina or outdoors on trails. When planning your trip, you can therefore decide whether to focus on festivals and cultural heritage or include river activities and outdoor exercise instead.
Landscape, Trails and Cultural Heritage
The remaining 25 percent of the canton’s area consists of land below 500 metres. The Kiseljak mineral spring area is another special feature, designated as a natural monument. For cyclists, the canton offers 92 kilometres of developed cycling routes. They pass through natural landscapes and by cultural and historical monuments, including the necropolis of Goršić-polje and the Rimski most at Kožetin. The cycling network thus connects the landscape with a glimpse of the region’s architectural heritage.
The Stećci necropolis of Goršić-polje is the largest Stećci necropolis in Bosnian-Podrinje Canton, Goražde. It is designated a National Monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina and is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. From Goražde, the route runs via Osanica on the M20, then via Ilovača on the R-448a to Goršić-polje; the total distance is 31 kilometres. Check road conditions before setting off.
Culture in Goražde
The annual Festival prijateljstva brings music, dance, theatre, film screenings and artistic performances together in Goražde. Depending on the edition, the programme also includes a regatta, games at Žanj, bridge diving, exhibitions, book presentations and fairs. Individual programme events may vary from year to year; if you are planning your trip around the festival, check the current dates and programme. In 2008, the event was recognised as a cultural event of federal importance and interest in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Drina Beaches and Water Activities
The riverside destinations vary in location and the activities they offer. Žanj is a city beach in central Goražde on a river island, with opportunities for swimming, sunbathing and kayaking. Zelena is in the Zupčići neighbourhood and is a developed sandy beach with tourist signage and facilities. Activities listed there include walking, swimming, fishing and spending time in nature. Sadba offers shelters and extensive beaches on the Drina, as well as opportunities for fishing, kayaking, rafting and camping.
The Drinska Regatta follows an approximately 20-kilometre stretch of the Drina, from Modran near Ustikolina to Goražde. The route defines the event’s geographic scope; check the dates and registration options in advance. The tourism office of the BPK Goražde Cantonal Tourism Community also organises rafting on the Drina. Check current providers and availability before your trip. Sport fishing is possible on the Drina and on the Prača, Kolina and Kosovska rijeka rivers, which have abundant fish stocks.
On Foot, by Bike and Overnight
Near the Nedim Pilav Jogi mountain lodge on Ruda Glava, there are trails for walking, hiking and cycling. Klek is an alpine climbing area. Alongside river activities, visitors can therefore choose trails or a climbing area as different reasons to stay. Check local conditions for trails and climbing.
One specific accommodation option is the Ada tourist settlement. It is located on a river island on the Drina, three kilometres from Ustikolina in the municipality of Foča in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
