You can explore Batschuns during your stay through two specific themes: the parish church of St. John the Baptist and a network of chapel trails. You can focus on church architecture or follow the named trail destinations. Both perspectives lead to distinctive buildings and place names, lending your stay different cultural accents.

Parish Church and Stained-Glass Windows

The parish church of Batschuns, St. John the Baptist, was built in 1922/23 to plans by architect Clemens Holzmeister. It was the first modern church built in Vorarlberg. This regional distinction makes the building a specific example of the region’s church architecture. The trapezoidal stained-glass windows offer a distinct design perspective: they were made by the Tyrolean Stained Glass Institute in Innsbruck, based on a design by Gottlieb Schuller. This highlights two different contributions: the execution of the glasswork and the design of the windows.

Chapel Trails Along the Way of St. James

The parish community of Batschuns has connected the chapels and small churches in the Batschuns area of Zwischenwasser into a network of chapel trails. The many chapel trails run directly along the Way of St. James. Their named starting points and destinations are especially helpful for finding your way around the network: they show which chapel or church is the focus of each route.

The Magdalene Trail begins at the Mariahilf Chapel in Unterbatschuns. It leads towards the Chapel at the Bildungshaus in Batschuns and via the Platte up to Batschuns Parish Church. The other two described trails start at the parish church: the Wendelin Trail leads to St. Wendelin Chapel in Buchebrunnen, and the Johannes Trail to St. Peter and St. Paul Chapel in Furx. The trails therefore differ not only in name but also in their respective destinations. If you would like to make a particular place the focus of your visit, you can use these starting points and destinations as a guide.

Historic Buildings in Batschuns

The Chapel of St. Wendelin in Buchebrunnen adds a documented building history to the trail destinations. It was built in 1724; the tower and sacristy were added in 1750. In 2009/2010, the chapel was extensively restored with strong involvement from the local community. The dates thus distinguish three phases: the construction of the chapel, the later additions, and the restoration. For a cultural stay, this place combines a specific stop along the trail with a history spanning several centuries.

Another named building is Ansitz Weißenberg, also known as Batschunser Schlößchen. It is located at Laternser Straße 34 in 6835 Zwischenwasser (Batschuns) and is protected as a monument by order under § 3. Together with the parish church and the chapel in Buchebrunnen, it offers a glimpse of different building periods and different forms of cultural heritage. Whether you are especially interested in modern church architecture, the design of the stained-glass windows, or the destinations of the chapel trails, Batschuns offers clearly identified points of interest.
