Feldkirch offers two distinct highlights for a stay: the medieval Old Town, which can be explored on foot, and the Wildlife Park, with walking trails, guided tours and animal feedings. There is also a cultural and convention centre, as well as wine and food experiences. When planning your trip, consider whether you mainly want to explore historic urban spaces, spend time at the Wildlife Park or plan your trip around an event date.

Explore the Old Town on foot

Feldkirch’s medieval centre can be explored on foot along cobblestone streets, through narrow lanes and beneath romantic arcades. An audio guide leads you on a self-guided tour of the Old Town. This combines a stroll through the historic streets with a tour accompanied by the guide.

Until the first half of the 19th century, the historic town was surrounded by a ring of fortifications. These included the town wall, moat, towers and gates. The ring provides a framework for the tour that goes beyond individual buildings: it shows the different elements that made up the town’s former defences.

The round Katzenturm, with eight storeys, was built between 1491 and 1507 as part of the town’s fortifications during the reign of Emperor Maximilian I. The history of the town square dates back to the 13th century: it has been the heart and marketplace of Feldkirch ever since. The Johanniterkirche was the first church in the Old Town. These places highlight different aspects of history—from fortifications and trade to church history.

Wildlife Park and Reichenfeld

Feldkirch Wildlife Park is home to over 160 animals from 26 species. Pleasant walking paths also make the park a great destination for an outdoor stroll; guided tours and animal feedings offer additional ways to visit. You can reach the Wildlife Park on foot, by bicycle or by car, so your visit is not limited to one mode of transport.

In Feldkirch’s Reichenfeld, a large, shady playground with water features invites children to play. As playground facilities can change, it is advisable to check the current situation before your visit.

Culture, events and wine

Montforthaus, Feldkirch’s cultural and convention centre, opened its doors in 2015. It hosts many high-profile events every year; individual programmes and dates may change. If a particular event is the reason for your trip, check the dates for your intended travel year.

Rooms at Montforthaus can be hired for your own events, including classical concerts, receptions, large national and international conventions, and corporate events of all kinds for 50 or more people. If you are making specific plans, check availability and arrangements for your preferred date.

Since 1998, the Vinobile wine fair has brought winemakers from all of Austria’s wine-growing regions to Feldkirch. This annual event offers a reason to plan a trip, but the programme may change. If you would like to coordinate your stay with the fair, check the dates for the relevant year.

Culinary discoveries can also bring together the town’s history and regional specialities: a culinary excursion through Feldkirch shares interesting facts about the town, and may include tastings such as chocolate, spices and wine. As the availability of specific tours may vary, check what is on offer for your travel dates.
