Schwarzenberg is shaped by a wide range of landscapes, its listed village square, Angelika Kauffmann’s art and recurring cultural events. When planning your trip, it is worth considering the event season and the conditions for your chosen tour together.

Landscape and listed village square

Schwarzenberg stretches from the 1,464-metre-high Hochälpele via the Bödele and Lorena to the Bregenzerache and the Untere Au at 564 metres. The village square and the surrounding houses have been listed since the late 1980s.

Art and village history

The parish church in Schwarzenberg features apostle frescoes by Angelika Kauffmann. It is also home to an altarpiece that the artist dedicated to the church in 1802. Angelika Kauffmann lived from 1741 to 1807. The frescoes and the altarpiece represent two different forms of sacred art within the parish church.

The Angelika Kauffmann Museum presents changing annual exhibitions featuring original paintings by the artist. If you want to see the original works in particular, check the current programme before your trip. Two cultural themes can help you plan: Kauffmann’s art in the church and museum, and music and local customs at recurring events.

Cultural events throughout the year

The Schubertiade Schwarzenberg takes place each spring and autumn. The programme at the Angelika-Kauffmann-Saal includes chamber concerts, song recitals and piano concerts. If music influences your travel dates, consider spring or autumn; check the specific event dates before your trip.

The traditional market takes place in mid-September, with the Alptag in the days beforehand. The Alptag celebrates the animals’ and alpine herders’ return after around three months on the alpine pastures. During Advent, the traditional Advent market is held annually in the listed village centre. The cultural events therefore do not all take place in the same season: the Schubertiade spans spring and autumn, while the market and Alptag are held in September and the Advent market during Advent.

Plan your train journey and routes

The Wälderbähnle runs along the five-kilometre route from Bezau to Schwarzenberg; the journey takes 20 minutes. This travel time gives you a specific timeframe for the train journey; check the current timetable when planning it into your day.

On the Tobelrunde in Schwarzenberg, sturdy footwear and sure-footedness are required in wet conditions because of some forest sections and unpaved terrain. The Achauen Rundweg can be walked year-round with few restrictions; exceptions apply when there is heavy snow in winter or flooding of the Bregenzerache. This comparison can help you choose the season: wet conditions are the main concern on the Tobelrunde, while the Achauen Rundweg is affected by the specified winter and flood conditions. Check conditions before setting out if the weather or water level may be a factor.
