The alpine history educational trail, Werkraumhaus and Bezegg-Sul each offer a different perspective on Andelsbuch: alpine pastures, a raised bog and alpine flora shape the trail, while Werkraumhaus represents regional craftsmanship and Bezegg-Sul recalls the “Wälder Republic.” A cycle path runs through all of Andelsbuch, and two sections of double chairlifts take you up to the Niedere. When planning your trip, you can focus on nature trails, architectural heritage or a ride up into the mountains.
Alpine history, trails and water
The alpine history educational trail is a circular route with several options to choose from, and shortcuts are also available. It takes families through alpine pastures, across a raised bog and along a mountain ridge. Informative display boards introduce families to alpine flora. The route thus brings together a perspective on alpine history and the plant life of the alpine pastures.
The landscape shaped by water has several points of interest, too. The Brühlbach, also known as the Andelsbuch village stream, has carved deep into the slate rock between Andelsbuch and Egg, creating waterfalls. The “Andelsbuch | Paths to the Water – Andelsbuch Power Station with Reservoirs” hike passes two reservoirs. The difference is clear: at the Brühlbach, the cut into the slate rock explains how the waterfalls formed, while the hike passes by the reservoirs.
Craftsmanship, buildings and history
Since 2013, Werkraum Bregenzerwald has been housed in a new building, Werkraumhaus. It was designed by Swiss architect Peter Zumthor and built by Werkraum members. The building symbolizes regional craftsmanship and serves as an exhibition and meeting venue. Werkraum Bregenzerwald in Andelsbuch is accessible to visitors with disabilities.
Bezegg-Sul stands before the Bezegg Pass summit at an altitude of around 800 metres. It is a neo-Gothic, heritage-protected column; as the Bezeggsul, it recalls the historic “Wälder Republic.” Andelsbuch church is considered the oldest parish and thus the mother church of the Inner Bregenzerwald in connection with the years 1086 to 1092.
The “Umgang Andelsbuch” walking tour takes you to the noteworthy house “Hof Nr. 626.” Andelsbuch Power Station is an Art Nouveau building. These offer different architectural and historical perspectives: from a single house along a walking tour to the power station’s architectural character and the history of the church.
Around the valley and up to the Niedere
The cycle path runs through all of Andelsbuch and continues up the valley to Schoppernau or down the valley to Doren. The directions are clear: follow the route through the valley and choose between the two continuations.
The Tal–Gerach and Gerach–Niedere double chairlifts take you up to the 1,540-metre-high Niedere, Andelsbuch’s local mountain, in two sections. The lifts operate seasonally; check operating times and access before your visit.
